Now I am hooked. Wish I didn’t wait this long to start.

This podcast sat in my feed for a long time before I had the courage to start listening.

Today, I started with Episode 2 of Life of the Mind (which starts with chapter 1 of the book).

So far this year (2025) this wonderful little episode is the first online experience that did not leave me in a state of high anxiety BUT somehow returned me back to the “real” world in a way that makes me feel better equipped to engage with it.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Some Questions of Moral Philosophy, Sections 1 + 2 | Responsibility and Judgment
Q: Two questions about whether thinking is a universal capacity or restricted to a few; is the two-in-one dialogue a universal human capacity or something only a few possess?
The host asserts that Arendt believes everyone has the capacity to think, though most do not exercise it regularly; thinking remains a universal human potential that acts as a safeguard against evil, not a guarantee of moral guidance.
Some Questions of Moral Philosophy, Sections 1 + 2 | Responsibility and Judgment
Q: Hi. I have what I think is just a simple clarification question...
The guest explains that Arendt doesn't rely on psychology or Freud to ground responsibility; she emphasizes thinking as a private, self-referential dialogue that constrains action and maintains personal integrity.
Hannah Arendt: An American Hero with Shumaila Hemani and Shilpa Kamat | Bonus Episode
Q: How do stories or can stories shift systems, and what is your own experience with that in Canada?
Shumaila and Shilpa discuss how narrative reveals systemic issues, shifts perception, and empowers marginalized communities to assert their rights and identity, with examples from their own writing and experiences.
Hannah Arendt: An American Hero with Shumaila Hemani and Shilpa Kamat | Bonus Episode
Q: Would you like me to start from, it was difficult to grasp?
The host prompts the guest to set up the context, leading into a detailed reading of Katabasis and the central themes of precarity, citizenship, and the transformation of self under immigration policies.
The Emergency with George Packer | Bonus Episode
Q: What was the impetus to write fiction after a career in journalism and essays, and how did that influence The Emergency?
The shift came from a sense that journalism could only go so far in shaping readers' perceptions; fiction allowed him to dramatize how truth feels and to explore moral implications in a more intimate, imaginative way.
