Now I am hooked. Wish I didn’t wait this long to start.

This podcast sat in my feed for a long time before I had the courage to start listening.

Today, I started with Episode 2 of Life of the Mind (which starts with chapter 1 of the book).

So far this year (2025) this wonderful little episode is the first online experience that did not leave me in a state of high anxiety BUT somehow returned me back to the “real” world in a way that makes me feel better equipped to engage with it.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Civil Disobedience III | Crises of the Republic
Q: Penny asks about the relationship between science, peer review, and civil disobedience—can organized scientific minorities challenge dominant paradigms without becoming ideological?
Roger responds that the boundary between science and politics in civil disobedience depends on whether majority consensus is being unjustly upheld or whether there is genuine, verifiable evidence; he notes tensions in peer review and the potential for science to become politicized, while acknowledging that organized minority science can raise valuable challenges when aimed at preserving liberty and public welfare.
Civil Disobedience III | Crises of the Republic
Q: Susan, can you share how Indivisible and similar groups illustrate Arendt's idea of civil disobedience within modern federalism?
Roger explains that civil disobedience in the Arendtian sense is organized minority action that publicly breaks with authority to preserve liberty, and that contemporary movements can fit this framework when they explicitly organize across diverse groups to resist what is seen as unconstitutional overreach, while avoiding violence.
Planetary Politics with Lucy Benjamin | Bonus Episode
Q: How does climate change connect to planetary politics?
Climate change threatens the conditions of political life by imposing survival-oriented actions rather than spontaneous collective deliberation.
Planetary Politics with Lucy Benjamin | Bonus Episode
Q: What are planetary politics?
Planetary politics means thinking about political life as originating from, relating to, and problematizing our existence on Earth.
Civil Disobedience I-II | Crises of the Republic
Q: What qualities define a civil disobedient according to Arendt?
A civil disobedient acts transparently, not for personal benefit but for a group cause, and rejects violence.
