  • Super Informative

As a recent PhD graduate in Statistics, I’ve been finding this podcast immensely enlightening. I am looking to break into quant trading but don’t have any contacts or direct professional exposure to the domain. This podcast gives great perspectives on topics that professional quants deal with daily. It provides great starting points and includes tons of advice to people new to the field!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

045 - Rob Hanna - Trading the VIX in a Diversified Portfolio
Q: What kind of data are you looking at from the Fed, and what's that telling you?
One of the most interesting things I've found is that Fed Day edge typically plays out before 2 p.m. If there's a bullish edge, we've got a strong sell-off going into a Fed Day, most of the money has been made before the Fed announcement.
045 - Rob Hanna - Trading the VIX in a Diversified Portfolio
Q: What's your philosophy in trading? Is that one of the key things, that everything's just sort of research-based and built up from some research that you've done, rather than sort of more of a machine-learning approach, for example?
I basically want to know I have an edge. I want to be real, you know, strongly confident that I have an edge if I'm going to take a position.
044 — Nick Radge: Want Big Fish? You'll Need a Bigger Rod
Q: What's your outlook on relative momentum versus absolute trend following?
In the US market, where there's more efficiency, I focus on relative momentum, while in the less institutionalized Australian market, absolute trend following can work well.
044 — Nick Radge: Want Big Fish? You'll Need a Bigger Rod
Q: What do you say to the diversification argument of trading futures?
While futures can provide broad diversification, I prefer the risk-adjusted returns of equity trading based on what works for my investment goals.
044 — Nick Radge: Want Big Fish? You'll Need a Bigger Rod
Q: What motivated your move into equities?
The ability to manage more capital and the understanding that investors are generally more comfortable with equity investments compared to leveraged futures.
