Thanks for the episode on EVs. Glad to see you expanding your range (!) as all these topics are related… climate, recycling, circular economy, carbon footprints etc. I’m a keen EV driver and regret I didn’t move across sooner than five years ago. Of course the main thing is cutting emissions, but frankly the car is such a joy to drive that I never want to drive an ICE car again. On the subject of charging at home with no driveway, I use a cable protector, and now some local authorities now speci... more

  • Does Robbie read out these reviews too?!!

When my son was deciding which university to go to, Bristol was one of the options. He’d never visited and asked what it was like. I quickly replied oh it’s a brilliant city - they’ve got a good bin system.

The moral of the story: this podcast can seriously intrude on your daily thinking - in a great way. I’ve listened to the main podcast from the start and have learned loads. This podcast feed is a great way to find the key recommendations and I’m working my way back through them.

    And if yo... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Should you recycle cartons at kerbside or community hubs?
Q: It seems recently my local council, Selby, has changed the rules for what can be put in the blue bin. Should I continue to take cartons to the blue curbside or use the local Tetra Pak bin at the community centre?
Pre-sorting is generally beneficial, and sending cartons to a recycler that already handles sorted material tends to yield better recycling outcomes than mixing in curbside streams. If the community centre's Tetra Pak bin is high-quality and the material is clean, it can be a good option, but economies of scale and current council practices can influence which path is more effective. As processes improve, curbside may become the preferred route, provided the material remains suitably sorted and uncontaminated.
Does folding crisp packets into triangles affect recycling?
Q: Does folding soft plastic packaging into triangles help or hinder the recycling process?
The experts say it hinders sorting because crumpled triangles don't reopen easily, so keeping packaging flat improves the sorting process.
Can tape go in the flexible plastic bin?
Q: Could you take tape to a soft plastic recycling bin or a flexible plastic recycling bin?
The hosts conclude that plastic tape, especially with adhesive, is not suitable for soft/flexible plastic recycling due to contamination and processing issues, and recommend removing tape from boxes before recycling or disposing.
Is recycled plastic safe?
Q: Is it true that recycled plastic is worse for humans than virgin plastic?
The hosts acknowledge there is some basis for concern raised by reports, but emphasize that recycling is heavily regulated, with strong safeguards for food-contact applications and a general conclusion that everyday recycled plastics pose a very small risk when properly implemented.
How are mobile phones collected?
Q: Are mobile phones considered waste electricals and how are they collected?
Yes, they are waste electricals and fall under waste and recycling laws; phones are collected through a mix of consumer drop-offs, trade-in programs, and charity schemes, often with data‑wipe steps involved.
