Thanks for the episode on EVs. Glad to see you expanding your range (!) as all these topics are related… climate, recycling, circular economy, carbon footprints etc. I’m a keen EV driver and regret I didn’t move across sooner than five years ago. Of course the main thing is cutting emissions, but frankly the car is such a joy to drive that I never want to drive an ICE car again. On the subject of charging at home with no driveway, I use a cable protector, and now some local authorities now speci... more

  • Does Robbie read out these reviews too?!!

When my son was deciding which university to go to, Bristol was one of the options. He’d never visited and asked what it was like. I quickly replied oh it’s a brilliant city - they’ve got a good bin system.

The moral of the story: this podcast can seriously intrude on your daily thinking - in a great way. I’ve listened to the main podcast from the start and have learned loads. This podcast feed is a great way to find the key recommendations and I’m working my way back through them.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Does mixing waste affect recycling rates?
Q: What happens to recyclables when bins are mixed together, and does it reduce recycling rates due to contamination?
The hosts explain that mixing general waste with recyclables generally increases contamination, lowers recycling volumes, and can significantly reduce recycling rates, especially in settings with lots of food waste; data from councils show little difference between commingled and separated collections, but contamination remains the key risk.
Why do councils give different advice about bottle lids?
Q: I was asked by my local barista, why do some councils want you to put the lids on and some want you to take them off?
The split comes from old contracts that advised against sending lids and from new pushes to tether caps driven by evolving recycling standards; national guidance often clashes with local rules, so the best approach is to follow current national guidance while urging councils to update their own advisories.
How clean does our recycling need to be?
Q: How clean do cans, plastic, and glass need to be before putting into household recycling bins?
The hosts explain that cans and bottles can tolerate some contamination because it will be burned off later in the process, but emphasize the importance of keeping items as clean as possible and scraping off 3D food residues while noting that 2D staining is less critical.
After tethered bottle caps, what else might come from the EU?
Q: Are there any other packaging changes that are coming through that we might see because of the EU, not because of UK law?
Yes, the EU is likely to introduce more environmental regulations affecting packaging and other products, including new markings and consumer guidance to deter unnecessary use and improve recycling, which could become applicable in the UK due to proximity and trade rules.
Are toothbrushes recyclable?
Q: What are practical alternatives if toothbrushes can't be recycled at home?
Consider using bamboo toothbrushes or other natural-material options, but be aware these may not be accepted by conventional recycling streams either, and you should verify current disposal options via TerraCycle or local drop-off points.
