  • Good insights

Good insights and speakers but honestly sometimes the speakers mumble and I can’t hear them clearly through my earphone at max volume (granted I was in a public transport) so anything you could help with the sound editing would be great

  • Unwarranted Bias In Certain Episodes

Genuinely baffling that the basis of the discussion for the Freedom of Speech episode is a loaded question. It is immediately assumed that Freedom of Speech is curtailed in Indonesia — cherry-picking certain examples and ignoring the fact that people like the 212 Campaign can riot on the streets with little to no repercussions. Absolutely disappointing. I expected a much more nuanced discussion on this topic, and instead was met with such a myopic take, so this is the point that i unsubscribe.

  • Very informative

One of the few—and certainly the best—podcast about Indonesia in English. The interviewers present diverse topics related to Indonesia's current events, and the interviewees provide most interesting perspectives from within and out.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rassela Malinda - Papua, Development and Politics From Below
Q: First, can you just explain what you mean by from below? And in these cases that you're talking about where there are examples of communities working with NGOs and civil society and themselves directly confronting and resisting.
From below refers to grassroots, community-led actions where Indigenous people organize, mobilize, and form alliances to resist dispossession, negotiate inclusion in development projects, and push back against elite-driven policies from above.
Melissa Johnston: Resilient Patriarchies
Q: What is bride price and how does it work to organize and allocate resources and power in Timorese society?
Bride price is the transfer of money, goods, or resources to the bride's family that reinforces kinship ties and class relations; men from higher-status families tend to pay more, and women themselves do not receive the payment, making brides conduits rather than beneficiaries, which sustains gendered hierarchies and inter-family power dynamics.
Alfira O'Sullivan and Murtala - After the Flood
Q: Alfie, tell us about the kinds of fundraising that have been going on.
We initially started with busking but shifted to online fundraising which has been supported generously by our community, raising significant funds for aid.
Alfira O'Sullivan and Murtala - After the Flood
Q: Mur, I wondered if you could give us a little bit of a background on what has happened in Aceh since the floods in late November?
They've been experiencing ongoing flooding with the situation still classified as an emergency, and many people have been struggling with housing, jobs, and lack of proper government assistance.
Wahyu Astuti - Jakarta Water Crisis
Q: Can you explain how is it complicated to simply build pipes from South Jakarta to North Jakarta to redistribute water?
Ayu discusses the environmental impact of groundwater extraction and emphasizes that it's not a simple solution to distribute water between regions due to sustainability issues.
