  • Good insights

Good insights and speakers but honestly sometimes the speakers mumble and I can’t hear them clearly through my earphone at max volume (granted I was in a public transport) so anything you could help with the sound editing would be great

  • Unwarranted Bias In Certain Episodes

Genuinely baffling that the basis of the discussion for the Freedom of Speech episode is a loaded question. It is immediately assumed that Freedom of Speech is curtailed in Indonesia — cherry-picking certain examples and ignoring the fact that people like the 212 Campaign can riot on the streets with little to no repercussions. Absolutely disappointing. I expected a much more nuanced discussion on this topic, and instead was met with such a myopic take, so this is the point that i unsubscribe.

  • Very informative

One of the few—and certainly the best—podcast about Indonesia in English. The interviewers present diverse topics related to Indonesia's current events, and the interviewees provide most interesting perspectives from within and out.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Airlangga Julio - The People versus Fadli Zon
Q: Tell us about the setting of the court and the composition of the panel of judges.
Initially, the panel consisted of three male judges; after a request, a new panel of three female judges was appointed, signaling a positive sign, but the case ultimately turned on technical jurisdiction issues rather than substantive findings.
Airlangga Julio - The People versus Fadli Zon
Q: And so did the defendant present any witnesses as such?
The defendant did not present witnesses or expert witnesses from the Ministry of Culture; they attempted to call a historian who worked for the ministry, but this was rejected as improper due to conflicts of interest, leaving no Ministry-side witnesses or experts.
Wengki Ariando: Sea Nomads and the Future of Our Ocean
Q: Can you briefly explain who the Sama-Bajau and Orang Laut are and how they came to live in Indonesian waters?
They are maritime communities with long-standing ties to sailing, fishing, and coastal livelihoods; they use space across sea and coast and identify through exonyms and endonyms, with social and spiritual connections that differ from land-based groups.
Murni Sianturi - Education in Papua
Q: What did you find through your research about Papuan parents and education?
Parents care deeply about education and identity, want their children to succeed without losing culture, and prefer partnerships with schools rather than outsiders; technology can aid collaboration but must be used carefully—through trusted relationships.
Rassela Malinda - Papua, Development and Politics From Below
Q: First, can you just explain what you mean by from below? And in these cases that you're talking about where there are examples of communities working with NGOs and civil society and themselves directly confronting and resisting.
From below refers to grassroots, community-led actions where Indigenous people organize, mobilize, and form alliances to resist dispossession, negotiate inclusion in development projects, and push back against elite-driven policies from above.
