Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Saving Okanagan Bighorns with Mackenzie Clarke: The Fight Against Psoroptic Mange
Q: Are you seeing any transfer of parasites from MOUs to lambs in captivity?
Yes, parasites are transferring within the herd in captivity, with lambs showing early signs as mites build up in the young animals.
Fraser River Test and Remove: Recovering Bighorns with Chris Procter
Q: What are the next steps after completing the pavilion treatment, and is there a plan for habitat augmentation or translocations?
Next steps include completing treatments, conducting lamb sampling across the Fraser River, and potentially augmenting small, vulnerable bands with habitat-focused strategies and translocations once disease pressures are reduced.
Fraser River Test and Remove: Recovering Bighorns with Chris Procter
Q: What happens if a wandering or domestic sheep enters treated areas—could that cause reinfection?
Domestic sheep presence remains a risk and continuous testing in domestic flocks is part of ongoing monitoring; policy changes are sought to minimize reinfection risk and support long-term disease management.
Fraser River Test and Remove: Recovering Bighorns with Chris Procter
Q: Is there evidence that immunity from MOVI antibodies in ewes provides any protection to lambs or future generations?
Antibody immunity in mothers wanes and does not seem to be conferred to lambs; maternal antibodies may offer short-term, limited protection, but it does not provide lasting immunity across cohorts.
Colorado, Rewilding, and the Future of Hunting with Dan Gates
Q: Why is IP28 seen as a threat to hunting and wildlife management in Colorado?
IP28 would criminalize most animal interactions, excluding only essential activities like self-defense and veterinary care, which would massively disrupt pest control, agriculture, hunting, fishing, and trapping, undermining science-based wildlife management.
