Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Conservation in South Africa: Hunting, Wildlife, and the Truth on the Ground with Riaan Jacobs
Q: What are the major issues facing Africa today in terms of wildlife conservation and hunting governance?
The guests highlight corruption as a central obstacle, noting that money from anti-hunting activism can influence policy while arguing that regulated hunting provides essential funding and incentives for landowners to conserve habitat and wildlife, which in turn supports biodiversity and rural livelihoods.
White Sheep, Wild Places, and the Grinde Legacy
Q: What do you consider the biggest changes in the outfitting space over the last two decades, and how have you adapted?
The shift to instant communication and global connectivity has altered client interactions and business operations, but I believe in preserving the core experience—personal, horseback hunts in remote regions—while embracing new tools to improve safety and efficiency.
White Sheep, Wild Places, and the Grinde Legacy
Q: Harold, can you describe how the transition from Bill Mackenzie to you as the leader of Gana River Outfitters unfolded and what you learned in those early days?
I watched closely while Bill mentored me and I took on more responsibilities; I pushed improvements around camp operations, especially in logistics like the airstrip, and I gradually moved into management while keeping the spirit of the place intact.
Campfires, Conservation & Community: Jann Demaske’s Story
Q: How long have you been volunteering for the Wild Sheep Foundation?
I've been involved with the Wild Sheep Foundation for probably about 10 years, and it started with the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society.
Campfires, Conservation & Community: Jann Demaske’s Story
Q: Do you find that business and conservation go together or are they separate?
It's interesting because being a confident woman in this space allows me to navigate these fields and advocate for women and conservation together.
