  • Great pod, deck is stacked

Fun to listen to, expertly produced. Craig will almost always win. Here is why:

-Craig answers the question subjectively: whether this is a summer or winter album to me. He therefore has two paths to victory: (1) guest agrees with Craig, based on their own (not Craig’s) subjective experiences with the album; or (2) guest, interpreting objective factors (title; production; lyrical content; lore around making; etc,), comes to same result as Craig.

-Compare Jody: Jody is interpreting those same ob... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

U2's "The Joshua Tree" with Rob Sheffield
Q: How does the album embody Summer vs. Winter themes given its American landscapes and Irish perspective?
Rob and the hosts discuss how Joshua Tree blends outdoor, sun-drenched imagery with a wintry sense of distance and restraint, making it feel like a North American desert summer filtered through Irish sensibilities.
Big Thief's "Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You" with Valerie June
Q: How does seasonality affect the way you listen to music, and how does that shape your evaluation of this album?
Valerie June explains she wants songs to hold her through winter with coziness, but also wants music that makes her move in summer; she sees the album as a spectrum that encompasses both warmth and road-trip energy, ultimately suggesting a late-summer to early-fall mood that straddles seasons.
Frank Ocean's "Blonde" with Sam Sanders
Q: How did you feel about 2016 and music at that time?
There was a sense of being overwhelmed with the political landscape and covering the election, so the release felt just like nice music during the chaos.
Frank Ocean's "Blonde" with Sam Sanders
Q: Did it register for you at the time, Frank Ocean's back?
Yes, it did because I had this moment in the summer after the candidates had been chosen, and I remember playing Blonde during that moment.
Pavement's "Slanted and Enchanted" with Yasi Salek
Q: Can we start a little with the band in general and then we'll get into Slanted?
Yasi confirms that Pavement is indeed a California band, emphasizing the cultural roots of their upbringing.
