  • Brilliant stuff....

Extremely well researched topics with a great balance of journal clubs, surgical pearls, interviews with Stalwarts and tips on tricks on all aspects of Retina.

The general 6 or 8 minute talk and 2 minute discussion format of meetings misses out on so many nuances and subtle issues.

If "God is in the detail" - then this podcast is definitely heaven!

The elaborate discussion and detailed research of vital topics by Jay Sridhar really helps bring out all the "meat" on a variety of subjects.

  • A podcast that has changed the game

As an amateur podcaster and medical student myself, Dr. Sridhar makes what is difficult look easy with poise and talent. He is not only a host who makes his guests feel at ease, but he appropriately shares his insight within the realm of all things related to retina and medical education. What makes these episodes gel is without a doubt tons of effort built on the foundation of even greater passion. We are all looking forward to learning from each new episode.

  • Intelligent and lively

Coming up on 200 episodes of stellar audio, this review is long overdue. Dr. Sridhar has consistently provided fresh insights and honest interviews from the world of retina. He tackles complex surgical discussions, new drugs and devices, as well as a healthy dose of remarkably detailed NBA commentary. Thank you, Dr. Sridhar!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 503: Diabetic Retinopathy Screening and Treatment Disparities with Dr. Kristen Nwanyanwu
Q: What should a trainee consider when pursuing a career in academic medicine and running a lab, given current NIH funding climates?
The guest emphasizes gratitude for NIH/NEI support, the value of time to fail, and the importance of pursuing science in a supportive environment. She advises building resilience, seeking time and space to think deeply, and recognizing that funding landscapes can be volatile, so diversifying funding sources and focusing on long-term impact in health equity are key.
Episode 500: Listener Questions, and Retina Podcast Musings with Dr. Jay Sridhar
Q: What feedback have you gotten from non-physician listeners?
Non-physician listener feedback has diminished over time as more patient resources and online information became available, but there remains strong positive feedback about the podcast's value, with occasional critical input; the host emphasizes openness to feedback and the ongoing effort to disclose potential biases and sponsorships.
Episode 500: Listener Questions, and Retina Podcast Musings with Dr. Jay Sridhar
Q: Excluding Ajay Kurian, of course, which guest did you have the most difficulty keeping on the rails during the interview?
The host declines to name a specific guest, explaining a belief in separating a speaker's on-mic persona from their clinical abilities, and notes that some guests are naturally more prone to tangents while others stay focused. This reflects a broader skill in moderating conversations rather than criticizing individuals.
Episode 499: Career Perspective and Wearable Technology for Retinal Disease with Dr. Mitul Mehta
Q: How do you balance cost, reimbursement, and access for patients when bringing a device like Eyedaptic to market?
We've learned that the price point matters but isn't the only barrier; reimbursement and integration into the care pathway are crucial. We've identified a sweet spot around $4,000-$4,500 per device and emphasize pathways for funding, including state programs for patients who are employed and can benefit from staying productive.
Episode 499: Career Perspective and Wearable Technology for Retinal Disease with Dr. Mitul Mehta
Q: Tell us about Eyedaptic and the unmet need you're addressing.
Eyedaptic aims to provide augmented reality glasses that enhance vision for patients with retinal disease, offering a non-surgical way to improve function. The goal is to create user-friendly, affordable adjunct options that can complement existing treatments and help patients maintain independence.
