  • Depressing

I have yet to hear information regarding retinitis pigmentosa! 😩 have advanced arRP. Need stem cell and crisper. Rare gene (RP59) small enough for gene therapy but I’m too advanced for gene therapy. Traveled all over the world, including Japan. Will do ANYTHING to be in a clinical trial. Please help. Only 37.

  • The Artificial Intelligence Show

Thank you for the input on how AI is learning from Ophthalmology. Currently, there is an app called DiagnosUS that often has diabetic retinopathy portion (answering if the photo shows diabetic retinopathy or not) or even grading the severity - to win $. Now, there are times when the photo is incorrectly graded and you do have the option to report that with your own experience and describe why it’s incorrect - so training the algorithim is possible here. Thanks again for your insights!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Fellow Eye: Episode 4
Q: Do you have a framework for future patients who might become candidates for surgical gene therapies to reduce treatment burden compared to current injections?
A mix of surgical-delivery options and non-surgical gene therapies will likely exist; decisions will depend on individual patient profiles, with some therapies reducing injection burden while others complement standard care.
The Fellow Eye: Episode 4
Q: How do you counsel patients on the possibility of side effects in gene therapy trials?
Explain risks and benefits in plain language, use shared decision-making, acknowledge uncertainties, and emphasize patient-centered reasons to consider trials alongside standard care.
The Fellow Eye: Episode 4
Q: Do you have any advice on how to best get involved in these big collaborations with pharmaceutical companies where you get to play a bigger role in innovating?
Lean on mentors, be proactive about bringing something valuable to the table, and develop a clinical research infrastructure with patient recruitment to attract collaboration opportunities.
Racial/Ethnic Disparities in TDR, DME, and Other Vision Threats in Patients With DR
Q: Dr. Dedania, would you please walk us through the paper?
Yes. This was a retrospective cohort study using the Trinetics database from 2005 to 2025, examining disparities in adverse visual outcomes by race and ethnicity among diabetic retinopathy patients, with outcomes tracked at one and five years and stratified by race.
The Fellow Eye: Episode 3
Q: What criteria guide your decision about when to pursue diagnostic vitrectomy versus continue with medical management in complex uveitis cases?
Answers emphasize weighing infection risk, clarity of vitritis, response to injections, and potential for rapidly changing vision, with a preference for being cautious about cutting too early or too late and using vitrectomy when the diagnostic yield is high or when the patient deteriorates.
