Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Turning the tide on FIP with Dr. Niels Pedersen
Q: How do you view the legacy of FIP work in relation to human health and future antiviral research?
The veterinary breakthroughs demonstrated how targeted antivirals could alter outcomes for a lethal disease, and they provided a real-world proving ground that helped catalyze interest and acceptance of antiviral strategies that later informed human medicine, including Remdesivir's role in COVID-19.
Turning the tide on FIP with Dr. Niels Pedersen
Q: Why was access to GS441524 and Remdesivir so complicated, and how did that affect treatment for cats?
Right after identifying effective compounds, legal entanglements and rights issues with Gilead prevented easy access to GS for veterinary use, so treatment often relied on unapproved but active sources and a global network of owners and rescue groups before formal approvals could be granted.
Turning the tide on FIP with Dr. Niels Pedersen
Q: What happened from the moment you identified a potential antiviral for FIP to the point where cats started showing clinical improvement?
We screened multiple compounds, found Remdesivir and its active GS component, tested them in tissue culture and animal models, and observed rapid fever reduction and restored activity in treated cats within 24–48 hours, leading to a sustained clinical improvement and ultimately better understanding of dosing and duration.
All there is to know about the new reptile exhibit at the Field Museum
Q: Are birds reptiles?
Yes, from an evolutionary perspective they are considered reptiles, though they are not typically classified within traditional herpetology; birds descended from dinosaurs and share keratin-based structures and some physiological traits with reptiles.
An in-depth conversation with Victoria Stilwell about new ways to think about reactive dogs
Q: What do you do with a reactive dog once you identify the triggers?
Use the reactivity zones framework to gradually expose the dog to triggers at the comfort and tolerance levels, while teaching predictable, coping-based movements to get through discomfort and back toward comfort.
