Living in secret and stealing to eat is a hard life, but it's all Kuro has ever known. Fear and necessity forged him into the finest young thief in the wizard kingdoms. Nobody can hide forever, though, and a run of poor luck lands Kuro in a place where his quick hands and quiet feet count for nothing: Avalon Academy, school of magic.

Formal dinners have many storied traditions to uphold, few of which anyone actually enjoys. Unfomfortable clothing, strange food, endless posturing and preening... Kuro wanted any excuse to get out of it...

I have listened to this three times, and am embarking on the forth.
Much more fun than Harry Potter, or watching the US self-destruct.
I normally have a least favorite book in a series but not with this. Every book is a solid five stars for me. The author didn't lie when he said that this series is safe to and for lgbtq+ and kids. Also I love how dynamic and in depth each characters are. Sometimes when side characters too set aside, I forget about them or won't remember them once they'll appear on the later chapter or books. Not on this one, every character is impressionable, every character good or bad are relatable, unforgett... more
I’ve read the entire series of 4 books now, and this is the most enjoyable literary series I’ve read in a decade, and I read a lot. There is joy and enthusiasm in these books about a boy who has suffered much, but has not been broken by it. The characters bring to life the strange and wonderful world described, winding sewers and all.
This book is so good and the different voices for the characters are so good! 100% recommend to anyone who loves fantasy or the Harry potter books! I love it and I listen to it almost every day.
I’ve quite enjoyed this series. The author has created an interesting world, good characters, intriguing plots, and woven them together well. If you like things like Harry Potter, you’ll probably like this.

The narrative centers on a gifted young thief navigating a magical school and the wider wizarding world, blending coming-of-age tension with high-stakes fantasy. Across episodes, the focus lands on trust, loyalty, secrecy, and how mentorship, rivalries, and political intrigue shape a reckless yet resourceful protagonist. The world-building stands out with dragons, rival factions, and a school culture that mixes danger, humor, and tender moments, making the show appealing to listeners who enjoy immersive fantasy with character-driven stakes. A notable edge is its serialized, episodic structure that layers personal growth with ongoing conspiracies, keeping the tension high while grounding it in relatable adolescence and friendship.
