Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Founders Need “Scalers” on Their Early Teams
Q: What exactly is a scaler, and how should founders hire for them?
A scaler is a horizontal generalist who can perform multiple functions with a spike in a particular discipline, enabling early-stage teams to move fast; founders should look for generalists with adaptability, a DNA for rapid iteration, and the ability to operate across functions like finance, ops, analytics, and GTM.
Why Founders Need “Scalers” on Their Early Teams
Q: Walk us through how you connect Operators Guild and FOG Ventures, and why they are connected.
OG began as a community of what Casey calls misfit operators, which evolved into a platform that also feeds investment activity through FOG Ventures, an open-syndicate focused on B2B tech that benefits from the operator-centric network.
What Investors Look for in the AI Era
Q: What qualities do you look for in a founding team in today's AI landscape?
Two founders with complementary mindsets tend to weather storms better, but single founders can succeed too if they find an effective number two and maintain strong execution. The key is pattern recognition of teams that can adapt to rapid AI-driven changes.
What Investors Look for in the AI Era
Q: How should founders think about TAM in AI markets?
Be realistic and precise about who you actually serve and how you'll capture a disproportionate share. Large reported TAMs can mislead if they don't reflect your focused sub-vertical and achievable runway; strong exits can occur even with smaller TAM if the share is meaningful.
What Investors Look for in the AI Era
Q: What changes in the AI era affect how you evaluate a startup's potential?
We look for durability and defensibility beyond just the technology. If the product can be copied, we want data-driven proof of a sustainable moat, whether through proprietary data, strong distribution, or deep domain expertise. The founder's ability to adapt and execute quickly is critical.
