  • An awesome person

Pete is a thoughtful, intelligent and honest intellectual. He is fair and opened eyed and left of center. He feels like a brother who I love to listen to and I’m glad he’s out there. He calls himself a stoic and a Buddhist. It seems that it is working well for him.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

1655 Prof Jeff Jarvis reports in!
Q: What is the core argument of your new book and how does it relate to the birth of mass media?
Jarvis explains that Hot Type traces the shift from manual typesetting to mass media, highlighting how the Page Compositor and similar innovations accelerated information distribution, and he reflects on the labor and business model changes that accompanied this transition.
1651 Prof Nicholas Grossman + News & Clips
Q: What would meaningful accountability look like in the context of recent military actions and investigations?
Accountability would involve investigations, subpoenas, and public testimony from senior officers and policymakers, potentially through a divided Congress; this could deter future misconduct and illuminate what went wrong, though it is unlikely to produce perfect outcomes.
1651 Prof Nicholas Grossman + News & Clips
Q: How do domestic political dynamics in the United States shape our foreign policy posture, especially with upcoming elections?
The guest notes that US domestic politics, including election timelines and public sentiment, heavily influence foreign policy choices; leaders may resort to tough talk or showmanship to bolster legitimacy, while real strategic gains depend on cross-party consensus and credible commitments that align with national interests.
1651 Prof Nicholas Grossman + News & Clips
Q: First, plugs aside, what is the core takeaway from your recent analyses on the Hormuz situation?
Grossman explains that Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz gives them strategic leverage that complicates US policy; the US should avoid reckless escalations and instead pursue credible, multi-layered approaches that do not rely on bombing alone, as history shows such methods rarely produce durable results.
1650 Anya Kamenetz
Q: What do you say to people who are denying or postponing action on climate change?
Denial costs us energy; it is more productive to acknowledge the reality and redirect that energy into meaningful, doable actions that connect people, strengthen communities, and build resilience.
