  • For the Oceans

Been following this show for quite awhile and LOVE it. Informative, never boring and always gets to the heart of the matter without the sensationalism so many other draining podcasts have. Though he covers heavy topics, they’re important and you end each episode with a bit of hope and optimism for progress toward real actionable change (even when things look bleak). His critiques are always fair. The style of the pod is also upbeat and entertaining, which helps. Gives many of us ocean conservati... more

Thanks, Dr. Lewis for all the work you’re doing. You have such great content and dissect some of the most critical concepts we in the marine world should be thinking about.

  • Hmm…

Speaks authoritatively about every ocean topic, but gets a lot of things wrong. Very opinionated. Rarely interviews actual experts. Is very self-promoting.

  • Why no mention of the leading causes of ocean pollution?

I left 4 stars cuz I might just be missing it and not here to be a jerk. I am legitimately confused though about why the Auto and Fashion industry who together make up almost 80 percent of plastic pollution on the ocean are not being addressed here.

Flip flops, cigarettes, abs plastic straws are nothing compared to the normalized impact of these industries.

Machine washing synthetic fibers is such an easy point to address, and I’m incredibly surprised no one is addressing this.

  • Best ocean podcast ever

I recently started listening to this podcast and am now badly addicted. I have learned so much just through listening to an episode with breakfast every morning. Each episode is uniquely different and provides an amazing amount of information in an easy ily absorbable way, which is a great break for a student like me who wants to learn more about marine science but is sick and tired of lectures. Andrew explains everything in bite-sized chunks and has covered just about everything and anything yo... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Ocean Nonprofits Keep Struggling to Raise Money
Q: When is it time to bring in external fundraising help or a consultant?
Start with internal growth until you reach about a million dollars in revenue; once growth plateaus, it's a good time for a strategic health check or accelerator to unlock the next level.
Why Ocean Nonprofits Keep Struggling to Raise Money
Q: What is the most important thing to communicate to potential donors beyond the ocean itself?
Donors want to see the human impact and connect the project to people's lives—whether through livelihoods, communities, or tangible outcomes like fisheries sustainability.
Why Ocean Nonprofits Keep Struggling to Raise Money
Q: How do you decide whether to structure an ocean project as a non-profit or a for-profit venture?
If there isn't a saleable good or service that people will pay for, a non-profit is usually the route, and even then you should consider whether you can convert a for-profit idea into a non-profit structure if needed.
Why Tuna Might Be Doing Better Than You Think
Q: What's the next milestone for tuna sustainability?
The next milestone is to ensure 100% of tuna stocks have robust harvest strategies and management procedures in place, tested and functioning, across all regions and stock types.
Why Tuna Might Be Doing Better Than You Think
Q: What role did harvest strategies play in achieving this milestone?
Harvest strategies provided predefined actions based on stock status, reducing political delays, and enabling swift, science-driven decisions. They helped depoliticize management and align policy with scientific advice.
