The intelligence, depth, and humanity of Mary Louise Kelly and Tom Bowman, as well as of their guests, is always insightful and refreshing. This is now my #1 podcast.

  • The context behind headlines

Every day we hear headlines and it’s very easy to fall into in one ear, out the other behavior w/o ever thinking about what’s really going on, why it’s happening, and what the implications may be. Sources and Methods pauses the headlines and gives clear, thorough, and expert context. This is more important than ever considering the stifling of public info from public institutions, like the Pentagon.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

James Wolff was a spy. Now, he's writing about them
Q: What do you see as next for you after this book, especially regarding the overlap between spies, journalism, and media?
The author envisions exploring the crossover between spy agencies and media, including how agencies use public-facing channels like social media and PR strategies, which could become a focus for future work.
James Wolff was a spy. Now, he's writing about them
Q: Why not name the specific agencies in your book, and how do you balance realism with a broad portrayal of British intelligence?
The author wants to portray a comprehensive intelligence community without being limited to one agency, which is why he references British intelligence generally rather than naming MI5 or MI6 specifically, to keep the portrayal expansive and cohesive.
James Wolff was a spy. Now, he's writing about them
Q: I'm so curious about what you're allowed to write as a former British intelligence officer and what you're not allowed to write. How does publication review work in Britain for you?
The process is ad hoc and frustrating, with a long back-and-forth over redactions; much of the challenge is deciding what to reveal versus what to withhold, and the agency often insists on changes that can push the timeline far beyond initial expectations.
Inside a secret Pentagon effort to bring AI to the battlefield
Q: Katrina Manson, how did you go about reporting this book given the secretive nature of Project Maven?
The hardest part was accessing information when meetings were closed, minutes were not released, FOIA requests were obstructed, and sources were reluctant to speak due to the sensitivity of working on Maven.
Live Q&A: Trump on Hormuz; Lebanon, counterattacks, the intel beat, and more
Q: Is there a path toward de-escalation or are we locked into escalation given current military deployments and political rhetoric?
The discussion outlines that both escalation and de-escalation are on the table, but both sides have made maximalist demands, making direct talks harder and complicating potential off-ramps.
