Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What natural wonders have you observed this winter?
Q: My question has to do with snow fleas.
Snow fleas, or springtails, use a tail-like structure called a furcula to propel themselves; they are hexapods, live in damp areas around trees, and stay active in subzero temperatures due to antifreeze proteins in their bodies.
What natural wonders have you observed this winter?
Q: How does that happen? How does that kind of frost form?
Rime ice forms when it's foggy and there's a lot of moisture in the air; super-cooled fog droplets freeze on contact with cold surfaces, creating a white, opaque frosting.
Listers, extreme birdwatching and the "Big Year"
Q: Gino, do you think it's a good idea to do a big year? Would you encourage other people to do one?
Gino encourages everyone to undertake a Big Year, noting that it can be done locally.
Listers, extreme birdwatching and the "Big Year"
Q: Gino, how did you first get into birding and was there a specific moment or a bird that hooked you?
Gino's spark bird was a sandhill crane, observed during its remarkable courtship display.
Something Wild: Tracking the odyssey of bird migration
Q: What is the most amazing thing, in general, about bird migration?
Weidensaul is amazed that young birds, with no previous experience, can migrate thousands of miles driven only by genetic instructions.
