  • How does the GF parse culture and politics?

Long term fan of the Gabfest.

I have been wondering how you all decide what is cultural regarding the political. Steve reading the ad for a planned parenthood seems political, as does covering Bruce’s Minneapolis song. I support all of that. But you have been quiet in Gaza and there have been musicians who have taken that on, and authors as well, like Sally Rooney. Not to mention the cultural shift in general - lots of great Palestinian stand-ups.

I guess i am hoping it isn’t just a matter of pl... more

  • ICYMI journalistic malpractice

The episode on Ethan Klein didn’t even attempt to do any fact-checking or reaching out to the other side. In turn, they have completely botched the story, which isn’t even primarily about Fauxmoi.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

ICYMI - Keep TikTok Out Of Our Favorite YA Books
Q: Why do publishers update pop culture references in YA and classic books?
Publishers update to avoid outdated or inaccurate information, maintain reader comprehension, and keep a story educational and engaging for new generations, though this is balanced against preserving the original voice and historical context.
Culture Gabfest - Stuck in the Backrooms Edition
Q: How did OnlyFans convince people to start paying for porn again?
Leon Neyfakh explains that the business isn't just about exclusive content; the platform creates quasi-personal relationships with subscribers, which adds perceived value and trust, driving willingness to pay despite the abundance of free material.
ICYMI - Beware The Boy Mom
Q: Why do you think boy mom content has such cultural resonance, and what risks does it carry?
Because it taps into deep anxieties about male identity and the future, while also enforcing binaries that can marginalize daughters and other parenting styles, potentially normalizing problematic dynamics if not critically examined.
ICYMI - Beware The Boy Mom
Q: What was your initial reaction to Jenny Mollen's controversial posts and their virality?
I saw it as a intersection of persona, performance, and the persistent pressure on mothers to perform 'appropriate' femininity online, which then spirals into broader conversations about motherhood, gender norms, and the line between satire and reality.
Death, Sex & Money - A Sex Party Love Story
Q: Did it feel different with him (Tony Hawk) than with the other partners that night?
Yes, there was a noticeable sense of presence and recognition; she spoke with him by name, and the moment felt special enough to prompt a future connection beyond the party.
