  • One of the best TTRPG podcasts out there

I came upon this podcast due to my love of Pirate Borg. It’s a great podcast on Pirate Borg alone, but it’s so much more than that. The content that Luke discusses and the guests he brings on are always top notch. As an aspiring creator, I think that it covers so many aspects of the TTRPG space that other podcasts don’t explore. The Broadside Barrage is always awesome. That part of the Q&A reminds me of someone interviewing your favorite band, but asking the fun questions and not the basic quest... more

  • Great podcast about A Pirate OSR TTRPG

I really am enjoying this podcast right out of the gate. While focused on Pirate Borg (which as of this review is being Kickstarter’ed), it has a holistic approach to the ORS and 5e. A love TTRPGs comes through. The podcast has a good range of game creator guests. The podcast covered good balance mechanics, flavor and what Kai cool.

Production values are great and it is well edited. The sound levels are good. I can listen to it in my loud work van while driving on the freeway.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Venom in the Veins Deep Dive (Jon Pohl and Will Tramp)
Q: How do you run the Tezimach encounters to maximize tension?
Tezimach appears progressively as players uncover knowledge, starting with warnings in the library and escalating to a boss-like confrontation; his appearances are tied to how much lore players extract from the tomb, creating a growing sense of threat.
Venom in the Veins Deep Dive (Jon Pohl and Will Tramp)
Q: What is the elevator pitch for Venom in the Veins?
It's a classic dungeon crawl with traps, deadly encounters, and a strong sense of exploration; designed to be accessible to new players transitioning from standard DND to Pyrborg while remaining exciting and cinematic.
Running Adventures & Meaningful Choices (Levi Combs, John "Hambone" McGuire, Brian Shutter)
Q: What's your take on meaningfully designed choices in modules—how do you ensure players have impactful decisions?
The group discusses doors as decisions, environmental cues, and non-linear setups where player choices steer the narrative without railroading, using cues like doors, ambiance, and NPC-like doors for guidance.
Running Adventures & Meaningful Choices (Levi Combs, John "Hambone" McGuire, Brian Shutter)
Q: Levi, which format do you prefer for running pre-written adventures—long-form paragraphs or bullet points?
Levi explains a progression from longer prose to concise bullet points with bolding and italic emphasis to improve readability for DMs and maintain flow at the table.
Elements of Great RPG adventures feat. Professor Dungeon Master and Brad Kerr
Q: What makes Deathbringer's mechanics work well when adapted to Shadowdark?
The core idea is to simplify damage rolls by removing Strength bonuses, using a unified die-based system that speeds play and reduces bookkeeping for the GM, which translates well when ported into Shadowdark's framework.
