  • Oof

These are the kinds of people that you would run screaming from if you happened to get into an elevator with them. They breathlessly and passive-aggressively become antsy when things go slightly awry in the conversation and are absolutely not storytellers, yet they insist on launching into long, circuitous stories. It’s like talking to nerds at a convention, but bad ‘90s nerds who have no self-awareness and who drive people from the hobby.

  • The #1 Podcast on the Internet (According to Dads)

Join two dads, Brad and Yochai (the titular cairns), as they teach their young skull boy, Sam (the void between the cairns), life’s important lessons through the medium of old-school-style table top role-playing game adventure modules. In these 60-90 minute (AKA a tight 45) episodes, they explore concepts important in both life and module production: art, writing, layout, and design. But the trio also go beyond the bounds of TTRPGs and discuss other important life topics: music (thank you Bobby!... more

  • Nice

No need to roll; it’s all hits.

With so many OSR (1st or 2nd edition D&D-style) dungeons and adventures, someone needs to go through and review them, and these three brave heroes are up to the task.

  • Solid reviews from people who know TTRPGs

The podcast provides great exposure to modules and systems that might be missed otherwise. The insight the hosts provide, especially when they don’t agree, are thoughtful and articulate. This is a great listen if you have a hard time describing your gaming likes and dislikes. Or you could take it as a preface to the true work of art that is the Brad Kerr Sign Off.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What Lies Within the Pools Which Lie Upon the Shoreline?
Q: How do Karen and other OSR variants address party composition and dead character replacement in longer campaigns?
They discuss Beckme and OSR variants as more permissive about retooling or substituting classes, and highlight Cairn's approach where there are fewer strict class constraints, focusing on what the party needs and what makes the game fun rather than rigid archetypes.
Leviathan
Q: Do you roll reaction rolls for each individual monster or as a whole?
They prefer rolling for the group as a whole, with the possibility of a dissenting member to add texture, but generally keep reactions as a group mechanic.
Downward Spiral of the Lost
Q: Do you find this kind of logistical challenge to be fun and interesting?
Yes, these kinds of games are super fun. It's totally what old D&D was built for, as they involve problem-solving in a dynamic environment.
Seven Sealed Spirits
Q: If you want to play a tabletop role playing game, do you try and get a specific group of people for that game?
Players should curate based on mutual enjoyment, emphasizing fun with existing friends over adherence to particular game preferences.
Fragments of the Floating City
Q: How do you onboard new players for a single session into a pre-existing campaign?
The strategy is to provide them with the bare minimum information needed to understand the immediate situation their character is in, rather than delving into the lore and major players.
