  • Worth the investment

This podcast is powerful because Joshua spends the time to read and research the work of each person he interviews. Most of the guests are surprised to find how much he knows about the intricacies of their work. I’ve listened to other podcasts that many of these guests have appeared on and Shifting Culture has consistently been a more enjoyable listen because of the investment of the one conducting the interview.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 419 Scot McKnight & Adrienne Gibson - Traumatized Church
Q: What are the six pillars of trauma-informed ministry, and how do they apply to church leadership?
The pillars are safety, boundaries, trust and transparency, mutuality, empowerment, and cultural awareness; applied to church leadership, they guide how spaces are designed, how people are listened to, and how power and voice are shared within ministry.
Ep. 419 Scot McKnight & Adrienne Gibson - Traumatized Church
Q: Where did you first notice trauma in Paul, and why is it significant for a trauma-informed reading of 2 Corinthians?
They discuss how Paul's expressed emotions, pauses, and struggles in 2 Corinthians 10-13 reveal a traumatized or taxed mental state, which reframes his actions as responses shaped by past hurt rather than simple rhetorical tactics.
Ep. 418 Alan Noble - How to Live Well in a Fractured World
Q: How should modern distractions be handled when trying to live virtuously?
By practicing temperance and prudence, slowing down to survey reality, and focusing on the good that comes from aligning actions with God's purposes rather than chasing immediate self-optimization.
Ep. 418 Alan Noble - How to Live Well in a Fractured World
Q: What does the telos mean for living well in a fractured world?
The telos provides a directional purpose that grounds decisions, guiding prudence, justice, and courage toward glorifying God and loving others, thereby giving coherence to life amid conflicting cultural messages.
Ep. 416 Andrew Root - Rescuing Church Growth from Idolatry
Q: What biblical models does he propose as alternatives to growth-obsessed practices?
Root contrasts the vertical-prayer and relational formation seen in Elijah and the Virgin Mary with the instrumental, resource-focused logic of fertility worship, suggesting church life should center on being with and for the neighbor.
