  • Great podcast

Highly recommend this podcast for all sewists but particularly for those over 50 and living in the Southern hemisphere as so many sewing podcasters are based in the northern hemisphere. Lots of interviews with very interesting creators and links to their social media content.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Maddie Ballard: Patchwork-A sewists diary
Q: What was the experience making the traditional Chinese dress, the chongsam, and how did it affect your view of your heritage?
Maddie shares mixed feelings about the chongsam, addressing body image and heritage; she ultimately chose to create a version that felt authentic to her, learning a lot about personal style and identity through the process.
Maddie Ballard: Patchwork-A sewists diary
Q: How did you approach sewing a raincoat on a limited budget while moving to Wellington for your master's?
She describes gaining confidence in sewing, choosing a pragmatic outer shell of nylon, and using a more fun lining to keep the project approachable and affordable while adjusting to a new city.
Maddie Ballard: Patchwork-A sewists diary
Q: Yeah. When you started writing Patchwork, Sewist's Diary, what started you off on that journey?
Maddie explains she began the book almost by accident, starting with a coat-inspired essay born from a painful breakup, then realized the process had both practical and emotional layers worth documenting.
Gabby Brown: Plus-Size Patternmaking
Q: What makes the capsule collection and testing process unique?
They describe drafting for 1X and 4X, then testing across a wide size range with research assistants from extra small to 5X, demonstrating how designs translate to real bodies and ensuring inclusivity in fit.
Gabby Brown: Plus-Size Patternmaking
Q: Can you talk us through the motivation behind the book and who it's for?
The authors explain that plus-size pattern making isn't taught in traditional schools, so they created a resource for three groups—home sewists, students, and industry professionals—to learn, practice, and feel confident working with larger bodies.
