  • S4, E3

In the October 2023 discussion on Shadal and Ohev Ger, Klein and the host discuss why the facsimile edition of Ohev Ger excluded the introduction. I would suggest (coming out of my doctoral research) that its disappearance reflects Shadal’s change of opinion on the accuracy of his introduction. Through the influence of Shir et al., Shadal later changed his opinion on the origins of Targum Onqelos to a less conservative viewpoint.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rav Yosef Karo and Sefer HaMaggid: Episode 2 (with Rabbi Moshé Kravetz)
Q: What makes the Ahavat Shalom edition significant for understanding Sefer HaMaggid?
It restored the diary structure, aligned dates, and incorporated manuscript-based material, giving a clearer, more contextual narrative of Rav Yosef Karo's life and the Maggid's guidance than the earlier print that treated it as a Sefer HaLatayra.
SmallTalk: Introduction to the Zohar (with Rabbi Joey Rosenfeld)
Q: What can you tell the listeners about this book and the Sulaim, the Bala Sulam in general?
Rosenfeld outlines that the Bala Sulam reinterpreted Hasidic and Kabbalistic streams by developing a modern, philosophically inclined language to present the Zohar and Arizal in a way that emphasizes inner transformation, selfhood, and the accessibility of Kabbalah for contemporary readers.
SmallTalk: Psyched for Torah (with Rabbi Dr. Mordechai Schiffman)
Q: Can you give examples of how psychology changes the reading of a parsha?
Schiffman illustrates with Yaakov and Esav, showing how psychological concepts like fear, anxiety, and assertiveness allow multiple readings of the text, guiding readers toward more nuanced interpretations and practical life applications.
SmallTalk: Psyched for Torah (with Rabbi Dr. Mordechai Schiffman)
Q: What are you hoping readers take away from these books?
The host asks about the intended audience and impact; Schiffman emphasizes broad accessibility, with deeper insights for those with backgrounds in Torah or psychology, aiming to inspire personal, communal, and spiritual flourishing.
SmallTalk: Psyched for Torah (with Rabbi Dr. Mordechai Schiffman)
Q: What sources do you use when writing these essays?
The guest describes a broad, eclectic sourcing approach—from classical Torah authorities to modern psychological writers—anchoring weekly parashah themes in both traditional exegesis and contemporary psychology to illuminate character and behavior.
