  • S4, E3

In the October 2023 discussion on Shadal and Ohev Ger, Klein and the host discuss why the facsimile edition of Ohev Ger excluded the introduction. I would suggest (coming out of my doctoral research) that its disappearance reflects Shadal’s change of opinion on the accuracy of his introduction. Through the influence of Shir et al., Shadal later changed his opinion on the origins of Targum Onqelos to a less conservative viewpoint.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

SmallTalk: The Ultimate Parshah Challenge (with Rabbi Yitzy Fox)
Q: So tell the listeners a little bit about this book and also how it came to be.
Fox explains that the book is a Parshah-by-Parshah Q&A with multiple levels, designed to spark conversations at the Shabbos table for all ages, incorporating Psochem, Rashi, and bonus questions, and evolved from a shul question sheet he started.
The Making of the Siddur: The Sources of Tefillah, Part II (with Rabbi Moshe Walter)
Q: Why does Tachnun have such a variable history in the Siddur?
Tachnun originated as a voluntary, personal expression of supplication, with early authorities showing flexibility; over generations, scholarly authorities and community practices gradually established a structured form, culminating in the Levush and later the Arizal influencing its more standardized presence.
SmallTalk: Abled: A Torah View On Living With A Disability (with Michal Horowitz)
Q: Who is this book for and how is it accessible to a broad audience?
The book is meant for everybody—young to old, religious and not religious—because it translates Hebrew terms and concepts into accessible language while preserving Torah insights that apply to all of life, including but not limited to disability.
SmallTalk: Abled: A Torah View On Living With A Disability (with Michal Horowitz)
Q: How does your personal story influence the book's structure and message?
The book blends memoir with Torah commentary, using my experiences with hearing loss to illustrate how Torah instructions guide everyday life, relationships, and how we view disability, so readers see that Torah speaks to everyone, everywhere.
SmallTalk: Abled: A Torah View On Living With A Disability (with Michal Horowitz)
Q: What is the core idea behind your approach to disability within Torah?
The Torah view of living with disabilities centers on treating every person with compassion, sensitivity, and respect; it's about acknowledging humanity and applying moral responsibility to how we interact with those who are weaker or face challenges.
