I was excited to see that there was an episode covering Coffee and Cigarettes. I have a vivid memory of sitting on my childhood bedroom floor and watching this film for the first hour time so this episode was so fun to listen to. Felicia puts such thought and dedication into her episodes and it truly shows!

  • My new favorite film podcast

I love this show! Felicia is absolutely limitless in her knowledge of cinema but she has a great down-to-earth quality that makes it super accessible. Been really digging her filmmaker picks so far and the guests have been uniformly interesting. The best antidote to all the film bro podcasts out there.

How Green Was My Valley (D.O.P. Arthur C. Miller 1941) w/ Bryan Loomis (What a Picture Podcast)
Q: What would you pair this film with for a double bill, and why?
A double bill could pair it with Harlan County, USA to contrast a gentle, community-centered mining narrative with a cinéma vérité documentary perspective on labor struggles, highlighting different modes of addressing similar themes.
How Green Was My Valley (D.O.P. Arthur C. Miller 1941) w/ Bryan Loomis (What a Picture Podcast)
Q: How does the indoor shooting contribute to the film's mood and realism?
Indoor settings create a warm, intimate atmosphere that nonetheless conveys power dynamics and social constraints, making the domestic spaces feel lived-in and authentic without sacrificing visual poetry.
How Green Was My Valley (D.O.P. Arthur C. Miller 1941) w/ Bryan Loomis (What a Picture Podcast)
Q: What are your thoughts on Miller's cinematography in How Green Was My Valley on a rewatch?
On a second viewing, the visuals felt even more purposeful and supportive of the story, with careful composition and lighting that underscore family dynamics and the mining town's social structures.
Grand Illusion (Jean Renoir 1937) w/ Jason Christian (Cold War Cinema Podcast)
Q: What should listeners look for when watching Renoir's collaboration with actors like von Stroheim?
Note how their on-set dynamic reflects Renoir's artistic goals—humility, creative tension, and a balance between vision and empathy that ultimately centers the human experience over ideology.
Grand Illusion (Jean Renoir 1937) w/ Jason Christian (Cold War Cinema Podcast)
Q: How does Renoir handle class and social hierarchy within the camp?
Renoir uses the enclosed prison society to level social distinctions, showing that mutual dependence and shared vulnerability can override prewar status, which reinforces the film's humanist message.
