Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rewiring The Brain Behind Bars
Q: What do you think prisoners broadly are able to do through the writing program?
They are able to heal through writing, reflect on their past, and develop a more examined life by recognizing patterns and learning to rewire habits, which can lead to improved behavior inside and after release.
The Weight of the Medal
Q: Do you think the Medal of Honor, being awarded the Medal of Honor, sort of then other people highlighted who you were? And was that difficult at some point?
The majority of it is a burden. It's uncomfortable. You don't join the military to be highlighted as a hero and for medals, and mostly because people died.
The Weight of the Medal
Q: Can you talk to me first of all about the immediate aftermath of the attack, and sort of maybe the days and the months? I think you were Walter Reed for a few years recovering. Like what that process was like?
It was incredibly difficult. I was definitely suicidal for a good part of the time, and part of it is because you go from being a warrior to next thing you know being stuck in a bed, you can't get out of it.
The Choice To Keep Going
Q: How can people help you as you pursue this remarkable task?
We are looking to raise over £100,000 for Wings For Life, a charity working towards spinal injury research. People can follow along and donate on social media.
The Choice To Keep Going
Q: Do you think that everyone has that ability to in traumatic moments to find a way through and adapt?
Yes, I think we do. Many young children show remarkable resilience, suggesting that as we grow older, we unlearn that ability.
