Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kyle Keese - Denton Guyer
Q: What is your stance on equipment like shred mills versus more affordable alternatives?
Shred mills are valuable but not essential; there are cost-effective options and emerging gear that provide similar benefits, enabling programs with limited budgets to still deliver high-quality speed and movement work.
Kyle Keese - Denton Guyer
Q: How do you balance volume and quality of movement when integrating The Grid into a busy season?
They structure progression from basic acceleration to multi-directional work, then deceleration, and finally incorporate live drills and one-on-ones, all while monitoring volume to avoid overloading players, especially after breaks.
Kyle Keese - Denton Guyer
Q: How did The Grid originate and evolve into a system you could hand to other coaches?
The Grid began as a need for a more efficient way to move large groups and quickly evolved through testing many progressions; Brian laid the foundation and Kyle contributed his own progression, eventually creating a system simple enough that a junior high coach could implement it with minimal setup.
Brian Sutton - William and Mary
Q: What is your approach to conditioning bigs like offensive linemen, and how does time-on-feet factor in?
Bigs require a conditioning strategy that emphasizes maintaining leverage and explosiveness within a compact space. We use strength-based conditioning with a focus on time-on-feet, ensuring the players experience two-hour practice-like blocks in the summer so camp feels less brutal, and we progressively densify workouts to mimic practice demands.
Brian Sutton - William and Mary
Q: Could you give us a background on your path to William & Mary and your current role?
I recently transitioned into the director role at William & Mary after several years there, bringing a wide range of experiences from different sports and levels, including college, private sector, and NFL environments, which shaped my coaching philosophy.
