Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Sociological Theory - Specifying Race: The Colonial Constitution of Race in a Set-Theoretic Framework
Q: What are you working on next, and how does it extend this framework?
I'm applying this set-theoretic framework to reinterpret the legalization of racial segregation in the United States, examining Plessy v. Ferguson through a transnational lens and analyzing how resistance strategies were formed by people with a distinctly French racial logic, showing that this history is not merely domestic but connected to broader colonial histories.
Sociological Theory - Specifying Race: The Colonial Constitution of Race in a Set-Theoretic Framework
Q: What solution or framework do you propose to address these problems?
Shrink the big conceptual circle around race to focus on its genealogy and specificity. Race should be treated as one structure of descent-based difference with a defined geographical and historical origin, and theories should connect to how labor and trade relations shaped racial categories across imperial contexts, rather than relying on phenotype or ancestry alone.
Sociological Theory - Specifying Race: The Colonial Constitution of Race in a Set-Theoretic Framework
Q: Can you explain the problem your article identifies with how race is theorized in sociology today?
I argue there are two dominant traditions—structural materialists and symbolic-centric scholars—that have epistemic priority. Both overextend or naturalize race in ways that make it hard to study race as a dynamic social phenomenon across different places and times, and neither fully escapes internal inconsistencies. The result is a race concept that is either overdetermined by supposed natural bases or too relativized to be useful for analysis.
Sociology of Education - The Great Leveler? Juvenile Arrest, College Attainment, and the Future of American Inequality
Q: What is the future or next step for your research?
Future research may link to higher education data to explore students' college experiences and challenges post-arrest.
Sociology of Education - The Great Leveler? Juvenile Arrest, College Attainment, and the Future of American Inequality
Q: What were your findings and conclusions? Were any of them surprising to you?
The findings show a consistent association between juvenile arrests and lower college attainment rates across demographic lines, which was unexpectedly durable across cohorts.
