  • Excellent and Edifying Discussion

Technology has come a long way in the 22 years since I’ve graduated from Mid-America Reformed Seminary. But one thing stays the same. This seminary has excellent faculty who are careful and biblical in their theological discussions. I am obviously biased because I was educated there, but I believe Mid-America Reformed Seminary should be one of the first seminaries to consider a theological education. Listen to a few of these excellent podcasts and you will see why. I’m so happy I can keep up wit... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

302. Trad Wives, Feminist Churches, and the Jesus Who Transcends Both
Q: Now, you outlined seven specific ways that Jesus' treatment of women was countercultural and compelling. Could you take us through these briefly?
Dr. Compton outlines seven themes from Luke and other Gospels: Jesus' positive engagement with women in teaching, healing, and example; women as moral examples; women as followers and supporters; Jesus' inclusive approach to discipleship that includes women; the way he honors women in narratives with status elevation; gender-balanced storytelling that contrasts with typical rabbinic norms; and the role of women in anticipation of the resurrection, illustrating their central place in faith.
298. What Political Exhaustion Reveals About Our Theology
Q: How should the church think about the relationship between the kingdom of Christ and earthly governments?
The discussion emphasizes that the kingdom of Christ is distinct from earthly kingdoms, urging believers to engage in the welfare of the city without reducing the church to a political instrument or retreating from public life.
298. What Political Exhaustion Reveals About Our Theology
Q: What theological category errors are usually at work when Christians become emotionally exhausted by politics?
Dr. Strange explains that Christians often confuse optimism with biblical hope, treating political outcomes or earthly prosperity as indicators of God's kingdom, which is a category error since eschatological hope is rooted in Christ and not in political milestones.
297. Pastoring a Politically Exhausted Church
Q: What is the pastor's role when members push litmus-test views on political topics, and how should leadership respond to differing opinions within the congregation?
Pastors should address issues with theological clarity where Scripture speaks, while fostering charity and respect for differing convictions in other areas, avoiding the imposition of political conformity as a measure of faithfulness.
297. Pastoring a Politically Exhausted Church
Q: What criteria should guide a pastor in discerning when to speak directly to a political issue versus equipping people with broader theological principles?
The recommended approach is not to rely on a fixed protocol but to weigh biblical mandates, the potential impact on church unity, and the benefits of applying theological principles to political questions, using scriptural categories rather than issuing prescriptive political policies from the pulpit.
