In the 21st century, the church faces some odd headwinds. Technological advancement is accelerating, congregations are fracturing, and things like astrology and New Age spirituality are becoming more mainstream. It's more important than ever to thoughtfully engage with cultural trends outside of the church and theological disagreements within the church. "Know What You Believe with Michael Horton"... more

  • Deeper Theology

Coming from a nondenominational background with rather shallow theology, this content is opening up new doors for me. The large words and many references while unfamiliar, indicate the deep thought and broad knowledge behind these topics.

Excited to hear more and be exposed to ideas that most of the recycled Church messages I hear don’t touch.

  • To the Point

I appreciate that the Sola Media folks 1) are familiar with people like Rogan and Peterson and 2) aren’t afraid to test what they say against scripture. It seems like churches (in general) are ignorant of these types of online figures, or afraid to engage their worldviews, or perhaps find their ideas as acceptable and in accord with the faith. Good theology is so important and has much to say in these arenas of ideas. Paired with biblical, theological teaching, this show gives discernment to a C... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Christian Nationalism or Catholic Integralism, What's More Likely? With Kevin Vallier
Q: Can you talk about distinguishing Catholic integralism from Christian nationalism?
Vallier explains that Catholic integralism envisions a formal, more centralized alignment of church and state with a sophisticated theological underpinning, whereas Christian nationalism often lacks that fully developed ecclesial structure and can be less coherent about what revelation should enforce through political power.
Why the Modern World Is at War with Human Nature
Q: Why do you both think that telling this story is important for today?
The story helps diagnose why modern self-understanding—emphasizing autonomy and self-authorship—can undermine traditional beliefs about human nature and authority, and it points toward a corrective through a robust doctrine of the body, liturgy, and communal worship.
What Caused Secularization? Yale Historian & Michael Horton on Radical Mystics and the Reformation
Q: What made both of you interested to research and write these projects?
Both guests have focused their academic work on the history of Christianity and the relationships between the visible and invisible in religion, especially through the lens of the Reformation's societal impacts and spiritual phenomena.
Reformers or Revolutionaries? Why the Church Needed the Reformation
Q: What do you guys think in the long view of things would have been the possibility of the Roman Catholic Church becoming more reformed?
The speakers discuss the naivety of thinking reform could happen incrementally from within due to historical precedents of dissent being met with severe consequences.
How the Church Can Face a New Global Crisis: Childlessness with Matthew Lee Anderson
Q: What arguments would you give to someone who says the Earth is overpopulated and we should not have more children?
He acknowledges the popularity of climate anxiety arguments among students but critiques them, suggesting that the social dynamics are often overlooked, and encourages a focus on long-term impacts of declining birth rates.
