  • Increased my zoo obsession

So I was already a huge fan of zoos and aquariums and such. I’d already been striving to visit as many as I could, especially when traveling. Then I found Rossifari and my obsession only increased. Ha! I love how Jon focuses on the keepers and people and their stories alongside the animals. It’s encouraged me to try and spend some time talking with my local zoo people and I’ve learned so much doing that. And yeah, Jon’s a “goober,” which I love. If we can’t laugh at ourselves as we geek out, wha... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rossifari Zoo News 10.31.25 - SPECIAL EDITION: The Trouble Flies Off featuring Dani Larson!
Q: What's the difference in calling a dog and calling a macaw when they fly off?
Calling a macaw repeatedly can help motivate them to return, whereas over-calling a dog can make their name a less meaningful cue.
From Black Spots to Black Feet with Adrienne Crosier of the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute
Q: How do you monitor the genetics of the black-footed ferret population?
We carefully monitor genetics and demographics while producing as many kits as possible each year to maintain a healthy breeding population.
From Black Spots to Black Feet with Adrienne Crosier of the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute
Q: How does that affect husbandry and all that stuff since these animals are being bred for potential reintroduction?
We are very hands-off with the ferrets to ensure that they have the necessary skills for survival when reintroduced into the wild.
From Black Spots to Black Feet with Adrienne Crosier of the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute
Q: Can you talk a little bit about what their story is?
The Black-Footed Ferrets were thought to be extinct until the early 1980s when a small population was found. They were brought under human care to help with breeding efforts.
Hatching a New Idea with Sara Hallager of the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute
Q: How do you make sure they're eating, healthy, and managing breeding?
Keepers are dedicated to each aviary and know the birds' preferences, and monitor their health closely.
