Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Production Designer: Fiona Crombie
Q: What is the best advice you've ever received about production design?
The best advice was to start speaking up about what you want—the squeaky wheel gets the oil; articulate your needs early so others can hear and respond to them.
Production Designer: Fiona Crombie
Q: What do you look for in a script when deciding to join a project?
I look for a director I can learn from, a story I'm drawn to, and a sense that I have something to offer; I want to feel there's a meaningful place for my point of view within the world of the film.
Production Designer: Fiona Crombie
Q: And so I'd be curious, like, how would you describe what a production designer does in your own words?
A production designer creates the world of the film by shaping everything you see in a frame, from architecture and landscapes to set decorations, colors, and textures, essentially the big picture that comes down to the smallest details.
Costume Designer: Blair James
Q: Do you have any regrets or things you'd do differently in hindsight?
I would likely push for more time and help earlier, and I'd embrace a bit more experimentation and Easter eggs in costumes, though I'm proud of what the early version of the work achieved.
Costume Designer: Blair James
Q: What's one thing you learned from working on your first feature that you'd carry into future projects?
Being meticulous about preparation, learning to budget, and building a strong collaborative routine with directors and actors to ensure looks align with character arcs.
