  • That Critchley interview

Josh’s interview with Simon Critchley was great. An insightful conversation that also captured the humanity of the topic (suicide and meaning).

  • I almost understand some of it. But I like all of it.

I confess I haven’t left a review before now. And I do like beer, but I’m not doing this for free beer. I like listening to Josh because he knows how to celebrate other people’s brilliance without losing his own perspective. As someone not well versed in many of these themes, I feel like this is where I can be introduced to these concepts without my brain exploding.

  • Liberation Theology at its Best

Wonderful and insightful all the way through. Thoroughly and profoundly deconstructed. The host completely captured me when he shared asking his wife if she would object to his painting his finger nails black so that he could show up as an open and affirming Pastor. she did not object and he does.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Love Thy Stranger - With Dr. Bart Ehrman
Q: Why does the Good Samaritan example matter in this framework?
It demonstrates Jesus extending allegiance to strangers beyond in-group boundaries, embodying the agape-driven ethic that treats any person in need as a neighbor, which Ehrman argues marks a turning point in ethical teaching.
Love Thy Stranger - With Dr. Bart Ehrman
Q: Mind giving us a snapshot of what you mean by agape versus eros and philia in the pre-Christian world?
Ehrman explains that agape emerges as a behavior-directed love—how you treat others—rather than a feeling, and that Christian usage redefines agape as actionable care for others, including the needy, not just those within one's circle.
The Origins of Atheism in a Religious Species - With Will M. Gervais
Q: Is atheism natural? Can we explain it with the dual inheritance model?
Gervais argues that atheism can be considered natural in contexts where it is credibly modeled by those around an individual, implying that both belief and disbelief can be shaped by cultural contexts rather than being inherently unnatural or unnatural.
The Origins of Atheism in a Religious Species - With Will M. Gervais
Q: What brought you to specifically wanting to study something like atheism?
Gervais didn't grow up particularly religious but became interested in understanding atheism during university when he began questioning his own beliefs through academic discussions.
Stranger Things, Liberation Theology, and Influencer Culture: 20ish Q's - With Tim Whitaker & Billie Hoard
Q: When do you think deconstruction becomes more about avoidance?
Deconstruction is like a tool in the toolbox; recognize when to use it. It's not an identity, and there are moments where it can become a fundamentalism over truth.
