Learning, Memory, and the Making of a Physician: Dr. Maheshwari on the Science of Education
Q: How does stress affect learning, and where should learners aim on the arousal curve?
A little stress helps focus and attention, but excessive stress harms concentration; the goal is a middle zone where arousal supports optimal learning.
Learning, Memory, and the Making of a Physician: Dr. Maheshwari on the Science of Education
Q: Can you walk us through what happens in the brain when we learn something new?
Memory formation involves encoding through neuronal ensembles, recall and theta oscillations to move information into consolidation, and protein synthesis during long-term potentiation to solidify the memory.
Insights on Interventional Radiology with Dr. Paige Reed
Q: What qualities make someone an exceptional interventional radiologist?
An exceptional IR combines strong technical ability with 3D thinking, a willingness to learn continuously, adaptability to evolving technology, collaborative mindset, reliability, and a sincere passion for making a meaningful patient impact through both procedures and patient relationships.
Insights on Interventional Radiology with Dr. Paige Reed
Q: Could you just explain a little bit about what your day to day looks like and give an overview of the field to somebody that may know nothing about it?
IR is a broad field of minimally invasive, image-guided procedures that span from diagnostic work to complex therapeutic interventions, with a mix of procedural time and clinic interactions; there are two training pathways (DR-IR and integrated IR-DR), and one can tailor the focus from broad to highly niche areas based on interest.
The People’s Hospital: Dr. Ricardo Nuila on Medicine, Humanities, and Care in Houston
Q: What inspired HEAL at Baylor and how did the program come to life?
He discusses the grant from the Association of American Medical Colleges, the shift from elective literature-minded work to a formal medical humanities track, and the goal of teaching medicine through humanistic, narrative approaches.
