Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Peeling back Banana RAT.
Q: What exactly is Banana RAT and how does it operate against Brazilian financial institutions?
Banana RAT is a sophisticated, polymorphic payload used to establish remote access, enabling real-time monitoring, overlay injections, and manipulation of payments (QR/PIX). It leverages phishing via WhatsApp or email, stages its delivery in memory, and uses encryption and obfuscation to evade detection, with a broad attack surface across multiple banks.
More bark than byte.
Q: What do you suppose this malware tells us about where OT threats might be headed?
OT threats remain a significant target due to their potential for public impact, especially in critical infrastructure like water and energy, underscoring the need for robust defense, resilience, and careful attribution practices.
More bark than byte.
Q: But when you first encountered this malware sample, what was it that made you think that maybe it needed a closer look than, say, ordinary Windows malware?
The naming itself was conspicuously on the nose and early results suggested functionality that warranted a deeper look to understand the true purpose and potential impact, beyond typical Windows malware signals.
The skills pay the bills.
Q: As I was reading through the research, you describe skills as the new phishing attachment. What does that shift mean for how organizations should be thinking about user risk?
It indicates that the attack surface is moving toward AI-enabled workflows, where malicious AI skills can orchestrate activity across environments; organizations need to rethink risk by monitoring AI skill downloads, validating sources, and strengthening controls around AI-assisted tooling rather than only focusing on traditional email phishing.
Scam papers served.
Q: How do you rate the sophistication of this particular threat actor?
The actors are becoming increasingly sophisticated, combining dynamic, server-controlled PDF contents, password-protected archives to defeat scanning, auto-it tooling for payload delivery, and self-propagation to extend reach across multiple countries.
