  • A true debate

I really like the podcast. But love to have couple episodes where it’s a true debate Justin believes this and chuck truly disagrees because most of them they believe the same and have to defend something they don’t believe to try to make an argument. Great podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Do others inspire our herping to evolve? W/ Stephen Falick
Q: How does group dynamics affect your experience and the likelihood of finding snakes?
Groups increase coverage and sightings but can also disrupt the experience if the crowd overwhelms a site; the best approach is selective when solo or in small groups, and choosing cuts that aren't hammered by crowds.
Do others inspire our herping to evolve? W/ Stephen Falick
Q: In your view, is it better to learn from others or to do it on your own through trial and error?
Both paths have value: group learning offers exposure to different techniques and ethics, while solo sessions build confident, independent skill and intimate knowledge of specific spots; the most successful herpers use a mix of both.
Haranguing the Herpers w/Gabe Shuler
Q: Can you describe the Francis Marion National Forest and what makes it unique for herping?
The Francis Marion is a large coastal forest with mixed public and private land, including WMAs. It hosts upland pine habitats, Carolina bays, and diverse wetlands, but faces ongoing pressure from development and timber operations. Road cruising, permits, and legal constraints vary by area, and disease and wildlife management issues are ongoing concerns in the region.
Do herping techniques travel? W/ Paul Davis III
Q: Do the herping techniques travel?
They travel pretty well in many contexts, especially when habitat and climate are similar, but certain steps and cautions must be adjusted for local species, temperatures, and road conditions.
Grilling the Expert w/ Dr. Andrew Holycross
Q: Is it possible to save the rattlesnake population or is it worth the effort?
It is worth trying to save the population, especially with manageable conservation efforts, despite the significant challenges posed by climate change and habitat loss.
