  • Might as well get the full meal deal

With the addition of Mac Power Users! Everything here for the complete Mac head. A balance of voices including good international representation, and a mix of formats from interview (Inquisitive), roundtable (Clockwise) and Panel. Now not everything is Mac related, Pen Addict is a notable exception, but they are all so good you might as well.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Upgrade 631: Nessie Beneath the Waves
Q: What are your impressions of Apple's new Apple Upgrade Program and its shift from a loan to a lease with Klarna?
The hosts acknowledge the program's financial mechanics are similar to the prior upgrade plan but with a new partner and a lease structure. They have concerns about early termination fees, how issues get resolved (Apple vs. Klarna), and whether the overall economics truly benefit users, noting it's comparable on price but riskier due to the partner dynamics and potential fees.
Mac Power Users 860: The Friday Incident with Merlin Mann
Q: How do you decide what tasks to hand to an AI versus doing them yourself?
If a task involves long, nuanced judgment or requires a lot of creative control, I keep it human. For repetitive, structured, or data-gathering tasks, I delegate to the AI, but I constrain it with a style guide, strict prompts, and project-specific threads to maintain reliability.
Mac Power Users 860: The Friday Incident with Merlin Mann
Q: What is your go-to AI setup in your current workflow, and how do you balance between different AI tools?
I use a mixed stack oriented around Claude, with Codex/Coax for automation and a heavy emphasis on context and structured instructions. I keep silos per project and focus on thread discipline to reduce context loss, using prompts that separate narrative from mechanical steps to keep things predictable.
Mac Power Users 858: Making Educational Videos for 17 Years with Ian Byrd
Q: Can you walk us through your process from scripting to publishing a lesson, and where does your video actually start and end in the workflow?
Ian explains that he starts with a script outline on the iPad, writes the script, then uses Keynote to assemble slides, copies slides into Descript for transcription-aligned editing, and uses Remotion to render the video with the worksheet content synced to narration. He iterates with AI for variations and then records or substitutes narration as needed, keeping the human in control of the recording and final voice.
Clockwise 665: A Little Too Raw
Q: So hear me out here, Dan. I'm just easing my way into the question before you jump all over me. Do you read for pleasure?
The hosts discuss preferences between dead-tree books, e-readers, and audiobooks, with a focus on Kindle and paper books, and how reading habits change with travel and daily routines.
