  • Simply brilliant

Essential listening for anyone interested in the history of Europe. Probably many people know the story of modern Germany to some degree but these experts provide the perspective which is often lacking. I am still finding it difficult to reconcile the cultured and sophisticated Germany that I visit with the undercurrent of darkness which seems ever present. I am hoping that Katja and Christopher will probe deeper into the past in future episodes as I suspect that many of the themes of the mod... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 11: 1923 The Ruhr Crisis with Mark Jones
Q: How did the occupation influence the rise of extremist movements like the Nazis?
The crisis provided a fertile ground for nationalist and anti-democratic mobilization; Hitler leveraged the sense of national humiliation and the calls for unity to consolidate support, especially in Munich, while regional actors used the moment to propagate anti-Republican narratives.
Episode 11: 1923 The Ruhr Crisis with Mark Jones
Q: Can you explain the scale and significance of the Ruhr occupation for both Germany and Europe?
Mark Jones describes it as a multilayered crisis that disrupted the German economy, endangered the Weimar Republic, and redefined international power dynamics, with long-term implications for German political culture and European diplomacy.
Episode 9: 'We Are The People'. How the Berlin Wall Fell
Q: Could you talk a little bit about what's happening in the 1980s at the grassroots level?
There were growing protests and a culture of dissent, with groups like Swords to Plowshares and widespread disillusionment, yet many still navigated life under the regime by withdrawal into private spheres and by exercising limited avenues for expression.
Episode 7: East Germany’s Forgotten Uprising
Q: Tell us a little bit about how the East German state came about in the first place.
The East German state emerged from the Soviet-occupied zone after World War II, with the GDR founded in 1949 as a Soviet-aligned state that nationalized much of the economy and tightly controlled political life, setting up a regime that claimed democratic processes while maintaining intensive state supervision and repression.
