Debutante culture in the South is fancy and persistent -- and often very secretive. In "Recovering Debs," writer and former debutante Mary Lambeth Moore examines the shadow side of high society in North Carolina, the only state that continues to have a statewide debutante ball. The podcast begins with a story from the 1960s when a young woman's prominent father made her debut a matter of life-and-... more

As a Northern transplant to NC, I was surprised that debutante culture still exists. I work at a venue that hosts one of the events and find it quite distasteful. I was telling a friend about it, we started Googling to learn the origins and stumbled upon this timely podcast. Very informative!
This is absolutely gripping from episode 1. Lisa Grabarek’s well-told story is harrowing and heartbreaking. As someone who in my younger years in eastern NC was debutante-adjacent through a college roommate, childhood friends, and a cousin or two, I believe an expose of debutante culture in NC has been a long time coming. It will upset some people. So be it. Well done!
Pathetic need for attention
Mary Lambeth Moore is an outstanding podcast host. I am from Boston, Massachusetts, so most of the Deb culture is new to me. I am truly enjoying this series. Thanks to Mary for bringing this information to a wide audience.
There are only three episodes so far as I write this review but what a great start! Although I grew up in the south, I do not have any personal experience with debutante culture and issues but that doesn’t keep me from deeply empathizing with the women who have shared their experiences on the show. I have subscribed and look forward to future episodes.
