  • One of my favs

Insightful interviews with a wide range of writers who have great perspectives on history and/or current events. I’ve received some of my best book recommendations from listening to this podcast. But in addition to learning about some quality books, I find the conversations to be quite enlightening and entertaining. Host Bob Kustra does a nice job. Always a treat.

  • Some promise but needs work

Reader's Corner has a great premise: interview a successful author and thereby encourage us all to read more. That' great. Bob Kustra, the president of Boise State University serves as its host. He generally asks good questions in the first half of each program but then tends to steer the conversation to match his political beliefs. Kustra spent over 35 years in the murky world of Illinois politics before venturing into higher education administration. He should really know better than to ma... more

  • Not worth it

Kustra is an idiot. If I could buy him for what he's worth and sell him for what he thinks he's worth then maybe I could afford to offer a scholarship to a kid to attend a school that cared more about academics and less about it's football team.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

“Everybody Loses” by Danny Funt
Q: How has sports media contributed to the normalization of gambling according to your book?
Media spending on advertising, sponsorships, and referral deals created a feedback loop that made gambling seem incidental to sports, which in turn spurred more bets and more profits for both bookmakers and media partners.
“Everybody Loses” by Danny Funt
Q: What prompted you to write about the rise of sports gambling in America?
I wanted to explore how a confluence of technological advances, industry lobbying, and media coverage transformed sports betting from a niche activity into a nationwide, multi-billion-dollar ecosystem with real human costs.
“The War Below” by Ernest Scheyder
Q: What should we know about cobalt from the Congo and neocolonial mining debates?
The Congo's artisanal cobalt mining highlights human rights and transparency challenges, with debates over whether foreign or domestic projects can ensure better labor and environmental standards, while supply chains remain opaque and difficult to trace; some advocate U.S.-based, higher-ESG mining to reduce global abuses.
“The War Below” by Ernest Scheyder
Q: What difference does this administration's stance have on rare earth mining and electrification policies?
Ernest argues that while administration shifts matter, the global nature of supply chains means effects are often limited and contingent on broader international dynamics; policy moves may influence incentives but won't by themselves reshape the entire supply chain.
“Dirtbag Billionaire” by David Gelles
Q: Can you explain how the Don't Buy This Jacket campaign came about and what its outcome taught businesses about consumer behavior?
The campaign challenged consumers to buy only what they truly need, creating a paradox where awareness boosted brand loyalty and sales, while reinforcing a broader message about mindful consumption and long-term brand values.
