即位したものの政治的に不安定な立場にあった後嵯峨上皇は、早々にまだ乳飲み子だった息子に天皇位を譲って院政を開始します。自身の政治的立場を安定させるべく、色々と頑張りますが実はそれが南北朝時代を招く下準備となってしまったのでした。

天皇家が二つに分かれて争った南北朝時代ですが、天皇家が二つに分かれるきっかけをつくったのは後嵯峨上皇でした。そもそも後嵯峨が天皇位を継承するには複雑な経緯があったのです。
