  • Thoughtful and Independent Reporting

In these times, we all have concerns about bias in news reporting. This show does a great job of following a story to where the facts lead. If you haven’t listened to the two-part episode about the arrest of an American reporter in Israel, I strongly encourage you to listen. When the episode first started, I really didn’t know where it was going and was surprised in the end.

The show focuses on how Internet companies, like Google, are shielded from liability for the content posted by their use... more

  • Brian has section 230 wrong

Section 230 is what protects free speech on the internet. Brian’s crusade against it is severely misguided, and he is making interesting bedfellows with the Heritage Foundation and even Mark Zuckerberg. We are already experiencing eroding free speech. Passing age verification laws and other attacks on section 230 makes it easy for big tech to censor users and encourages big tech to harvest more of our data.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Meta Knew They Were Addicting Kids. Now They’re Paying for It.
Q: How did the legal strategy manage to challenge Section 230 in this case?
Mariana explains that they framed the lawsuit around the design features of the platforms—endless scrolling, autoplay, and like counts—arguing these features were deliberately crafted to be addictive and therefore not simply content, which allowed the case to bypass some traditional Section 230 defenses and move toward a trial.
I Was 11 When Instagram Took Over My Life
Q: What was the family's initial understanding of social media's role?
Taylor's mother initially did not see social media as a cause, focusing instead on general phone use, while medical professionals at first did not recognize the connection to social media, highlighting a widespread lack of awareness at the time.
A Video So Real It Looks Fake
Q: How reliable are AI-detection tools in determining if a video is AI-generated, according to NewsGuard?
Tools vary in reliability; some give high certainty, but none are infallible, and best practice is to use them as starting points alongside broader verification, including corroboration from independent sources and direct sensory cues in the footage.
Blindfolded and Arrested on Assignment in Israel (Ambie Award-winner for Best Reporting of the Year)
Q: What happened to Jeremy Loffredo in Israel and why is it significant?
He was detained and interrogated by Israeli authorities while reporting in the West Bank, blindfolded and restrained, facing potential espionage charges, which highlighted the precarious status of journalists in conflict zones and sparked broader questions about press freedom and government censorship.
The Talented Ms. Goldiee
Q: What broader implications does this case have for freelance journalism and fact-checking?
The case highlights the fragility of the freelance market, the ease with which AI-generated or fabricated content can be integrated into publications, and the need for stronger fact-checking workflows and editorial leadership to protect journalistic integrity.
