  • Absolutely wonderful and so needed

Funny, fascinating and friendly. So wonderful to have such a warm place for conversations with creative folk, particularly in the Scottish theatre community which doesn’t have a lot of this sort of thing. I hope the National Library of Scotland is archiving these!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ros Watt
Q: How has transitioning affected your casting and perception in the industry?
Ros shares that casting can be complicated by readers' assumptions, but over time audiences have become more nuanced; visibility has increased yet there are still moments of misreading, which the show directly engages with.
Ros Watt
Q: Tell me about the impetus for the show Trans People Are Awful. Where did that begin?
Ros explains that the show emerged from a desire to challenge narrow representations of trans people in media by presenting a character who is truly flawed and complex, thereby stimulating dialogue about authentic representation and the broader experiences of trans individuals.
Katie Slater
Q: What was the turning point that confirmed Mary, a gig theatre show, could travel beyond its original venue?
The project's extension from a 15-minute university piece to a full 40-minute ensemble show and its subsequent sell-out performances at the Scottish Storytelling Centre and Bedlam in Edinburgh demonstrated to the team that gig theatre could attract audiences and funding, ultimately leading to a Traverse Christmas engagement and Fringe run.
Katie Slater
Q: How did your early experiences shape your approach to directing and gig theatre?
Katie describes a hands-on, collaborative learning process from high school to uni, where directing opportunities emerged organically (e.g., pitch to head teacher) and later widened through university modules and peer-led ensembles, cultivating a practical, iterative method rather than relying on formal single-path training.
Tom Scanlon
Q: Where did you train?
Tom trained at Learne Theatre Arts and graduated in 2013, moving quickly into professional work.
