  • I like it. Cool concept, likeable hosts. It's a little weird that they don't always seem previously familiar with the material. Is that the point? Enjoyable whatever the case.

  • My favorite music podcast

I’ve been listening to Justin and Dylan now for a few years, and this is easily my #1 most listened to podcast. Random picks from every tiny branch and deep root of punk. Honest opinions, not jerks, smart, and funny. Also, for $10 they’ll devote an episode to your favorite record. An incredible bargain.

  • I really don’t want to re-rewrite my review .

I don’t listen to a lot of podcasts these days but wanted a punk one that was not interviews. Punk Lotto fits the bill. It’s refreshing to hear viewpoints on punk from people a decade or so younger than myself even if I don’t agree with their review. I’m somewhere in the 2019s now and will continue to listen if they keep churning them out.

Update: 2021: I’ve made it to where the format has changed so I felt like I needed to redo my review. Having the guest pick the album has been a great forma... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Guestlist with Oklahoma Lefty
Q: What drew you to the 2000s as the focus for your top albums, and how did you choose what to include given the constraint of what you would have listened to in that decade?
He describes using a concrete prompt to hone in on albums he would have actually listened to between 2000 and 2009, driven by a personal archive of year-by-year lists and the desire to avoid post-2010 discoveries, while acknowledging that mood can change what ends up in his top five.
The Guestlist with Oklahoma Lefty
Q: So when did writing come into play for you, and how did your focus evolve over time?
Dave explains that his sophomore English class sparked his writing, he initially wrote about politics and religion in Oklahoma Lefty, and gradually shifted to music around five years in, especially after moving to Substack and embracing long-form lists.
Nightmares by From Ashes Rise (2003)
Q: Why did you choose this From Ashes Rise album?
Jason explains that as he ages, his music choices have become heavier and more politically charged, making this album a fitting reflection of anger and catharsis; he also notes prior interest in the broader crust/neo-crust scene and how this release aligns with those tastes.
Horsebox by Leatherface (2000) with Chris MacDonald
Q: What made you choose Horsebox for us to talk about?
It's hard to be subjective when talking about what my favorite album from 2000 is because I am just emotionally, my heartstrings are attached to that album.
Horsebox by Leatherface (2000) with Chris MacDonald
Q: What for the listener, how would you describe this book?
I would say it's part travelogue, part unofficial biography, atypical biography, and maybe just some insight into a band that a lot of people love.
