  • Started dogs with Mark Dinsmore

Thanks again Nick for an engaging interview with another Mark, Mark Dinsmore. My experience with started (and rescue dogs) are the same as Mark describes. Anyone thinking about getting a bird dog or training a bird dog would be well served to listen to this Mark (Dinsmore) and Mark Payton. Well done Nick!

#356 | What Grouse Hunting Is Really About with Andy Wayment
Q: What was the tipping point for Andy to publish Idaho Grouse Fever?
Andy explains he wanted Idaho Grouse Fever to mirror his approach in Idaho Rough Grouse Hunting, focusing on all five Idaho grouse species and weaving in upland literature, personal anecdotes, and historical perspectives to create a comprehensive celebration of grouse hunting.
#357 | What Wild Birds Teach a Pointing Dog with Mark Payton
Q: How do you approach bird intro and the sequence of bird, then gun introductions for a pup?
Begin with the pup pursuing birds at a low-stress pace, using small quail for initial introductions, then add controlled wing exposure via lightweight birds or launchers, and finally introduce the live bird and gun in a gradual, supervised manner.
#357 | What Wild Birds Teach a Pointing Dog with Mark Payton
Q: Two training books give opposite advice about when to start training a puppy—how do you decide what a young dog is ready for?
Start with recall and gun conditioning, then introduce birds and natural exposure gradually. Avoid overloading early; let the dog's love of birds develop first, and layer in commands and e-collar work as the dog matures.
#346 | Lessons from an 80-Year-Old Grouse Hunter with Tim Flanigan
Q: What advice would you give someone who's just turned 40?
Life just begins at 40, you really understand life, set your goals, and enjoy it.
In Memoriam — Reload #183 | Good Reads with Glen Blackwood
Q: What do you think about the current year for woodcock populations?
It looks promising due to good weather during nesting seasons, and many birds were seen singing this spring, suggesting a healthy population.
