  • Great Guests, Great Questions, Frustrating Editing

I love everything about this series, specifically Print Is Dead and Full Bleed, but the editing is so, so bizarre and distracting. Every single pause or stammer is clipped out, giving no breathing room—and most importantly, no time to process what was just said. Sometimes the editing is so aggressive that ends of sentences or resolutions to a query are either partially lost or entirely skipped. I love to hear the natural speaking and thinking process of interviewees, and with choppy editing like... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Heidi Saman (Editor: Seen)
Q: What is the relationship between BlackStar and Seen, besides the obvious ones? Is it a case of you wearing a few hats, or is it one big hat?
She explains that Seen is a major program within BlackStar, with her rotating between editing, curation, and programming roles; the magazine is deeply integrated into BlackStar's mission while maintaining its own editorial identity.
Heidi Saman (Editor: Seen)
Q: So, tell me how you got here. You're a filmmaker. A lot of editors of magazines take circuitous paths to their current job. And I know being the editor of Seen isn't your only job, but you started as a filmmaker.
Heidi describes her journey from film school and documentary work to a long tenure at Fresh Air, then transitioning into editing Seen, leveraging her storytelling background and visual sensibility to shape the magazine's voice and direction.
Best of PID: Tyler Brûlé (Founder: Monocle, Wallpaper*, more)
Q: Where did the idea for Monocle come from, and was the launch vision fully formed?
He describes a long evolution from pre-Wallpaper days, a desire to create a global, print-forward brand with multiple bureaus, and a belief in maintaining quality and independence.
Best of PID: Tyler Brûlé (Founder: Monocle, Wallpaper*, more)
Q: How cool is it to be Tyler Brûlé?
Brûlé explains that the perception of cool is less important than maintaining a relentless work ethic, a strong editorial mission, and staying true to the brand's values.
Best of PID: Stella Bugbee (Editor: The New York Times Styles, more)
Q: How did Stella set out to reinvent The Cut when she joined and what was the mandate?
She aimed to reinvent the women's magazine by creating a more vocal, internet-enabled platform that invited broad participation and broke from traditional top-down fashion discourse.
