What energy shocks mean for markets and investors
Q: With rate expectations still shifting, how do you see demand for munis changing over the next year?
Investors have been moving money out of money market funds into munis as fixed-income yields look attractive relative to cash, and if the Fed cuts rates, munis could benefit from a rally in fixed income. This environment has supported inflows and positioned munis to perform better than in the previous year.
What energy shocks mean for markets and investors
Q: So, Adam, the muni market had a pretty bumpy 2025, and 2026 seems to be off to a better start. What happened last year?
The year was driven by a surge in supply that overwhelmed demand at times, with munis underperforming some other fixed-income indices. However, demand began to outpace supply again as the year progressed, and this year we're seeing a reversion to a more favorable environment with lighter supply and renewed interest from investors.
The role of municipal bonds in tax-efficient portfolios
Q: What happened last year, what's driving the markets right now, and how do you think the rest of 2026 will play out?
The guest explains that 2025 was bumpy with muni returns lagging some other fixed income indices due to supply dynamics, but 2026 shows signs of reversion to the mean with improved demand and lighter supply; geopolitical factors and treasury moves influence munis, but the muni market remains largely rates-driven and credit quality in many states remains solid, with tax policy developments potentially impacting flows.
The role of alternative investments in modern portfolios
Q: What barriers in scaling underutilized products exist?
It's really a combination of all, but I think really the biggest is the education gap regarding alternative investments.
The role of alternative investments in modern portfolios
Q: Which types of alternative investment products are most mature in terms of their structure and distribution?
Hedge funds are really the most mature with a very long history since really the mid-20th century, as they have standardized structures in the form of limited partnerships.
