結城は結城紬で知られる町ですが、その着物を守ってきた桐箪笥の文化も欠かせません。群馬県桐生から結城にかけては桐の産地で、地名にもその歴史が残されています。一方、結城は四百年にわたり乾麺づくりが受け継がれてきた土地でもあります。俳人・与謝蕪村は十年ほど結城に暮らし、「狐火や五助新田の麦の雨」の句を詠みました。広々とした田園に広がる麦畑の風景は、乾麺づくりの営みとも重なります。「蕪村の里」といううどんを味わいながら、俳句を語り、人が集い、農業や食文化を育んできた時間に思いを巡らせると、結城紬と桐、麦... more
結城は鬼怒川と田川に育まれた水の豊かな町です。鬼怒川は、絹づくりを支える川として「絹川」とも呼ばれたと伝えられています。蚕は桑の葉を食べ続け、やがて約1500メートルもの糸を吐いて繭を作ります。その静かな営みに、結城紬の原点を感じました。続いて味わったのは、昔ながらの製法で仕込まれた「紬味噌」。原料には宮城県産の立長葉大豆が使われ、その形は繭によく似ています。この大豆は味噌だけでなく、結城の豆腐や煮豆にも使われ、甘みが強く、関東の醤油や味噌によく合う味わいです。結城紬を育んだ絹の文化と、立長葉大... more
結城を訪ねてきました。東京から新幹線で小山へ、そこから水戸線でわずか7分。駅にはお蚕をイメージしたかわいらしいデザインが迎えてくれます。結城といえば、ユネスコ無形文化遺産にも登録されている結城紬。鎌倉時代から受け継がれ、「三世代着て初めて味が出る」と言われるほど長く愛される着物です。今回は「蚊絣」という繊細な柄や、麻を織り込んだ涼やかな夏結城にも触れ、その美しさを実感しました。そして名物の「ゆでまんじゅう」は、江戸時代に疫病退散を願って神社に奉納したのが始まり。ちょうど麦秋を迎えた小麦畑が広がる... more
