桑名七里渡し公園には、伊勢路に入る入口である「一の鳥居」があります。この鳥居は、20年ごとに行われる伊勢神宮の遷宮で建て替えられた鳥居が移築されたものです。ここから伊勢に向かう東海道には、「はまぐり」を商う店が並んでいます。今回、桑名のはまぐりを食べて一週間たった今もなぜか元気。内側から充実している感じです。内側からゆっくり滋養が満たされていくのを実感します。元気というのは、自分で自分を励まして力を持つことだと、伊勢路の入口のはまぐりは教えてくれました。
桑名の名店「蛤料理 うえむら」で焼きはまぐりをいただきました。3つ並んで出てきた焼きはまぐりは、生でもなく焼かれすぎてもいず絶妙なころあい。1つはバターをのせて、もうひとつはスポイトで醤油を2滴たらして、最後はその両方で。はまぐりで思い浮かべるのは「蜃気楼」の「蜃」という漢字です。これは巨大はまぐりの化け物を表します。この「蜃」が気を吐いて見せるのが「蜃気楼」なのだそうです。「うえむら」の焼きはまぐりのおいしさは、まさにこの「蜃気楼」にやられたようなおいしさでした。
揖斐川、長良川、木曽川の三本の川が、伊勢湾に向かって流れています。その河口の近くで獲れる蛤は「ヤマトハマグリ」と呼ばれて、とても美味しい。今回は「蛤料理・うえむら」で、人生初の「蛤のフルコース」を頂きました。伊勢湾の海水と真水が混ざり合う汽水で育った蛤を使った料理の数々、期待を超えた驚きの美味しさでした。さらにびっくりしたのは、その蛤の大きさ。まるで「カスタネット」のように打ち鳴らせるぐらいのサイズでした。
冬の北陸、福井は日本有数の米どころ。福井は「越の国」に連なる土地で、名だたる銘柄米・コシヒカリが生まれた場所。今も農業試験場では、新しい品種が次々と育てられ、米は静かに進化を続けています。そんな福井にある大本山・永平寺では、坐禅、読経、朝粥、掃除――一つひとつの所作を丁寧に行う修行の中で、感謝と集中が積み重ねられています。祈りとは、願うことではなく、目の前の現実をまっすぐ受け取ることなのかもしれません。毎日を磨き続けるという“静かな進化”もまた、人を育てます。
