松山や道後、宇和島を歩いていると、自転車に乗る人の多さに驚きます。子どもから高齢者までヘルメットを着用し、愛媛はまさに自転車王国でした。その背景には、日露戦争で松山に収容されたロシア兵捕虜のため、市民が自転車を貸し出し、1905年には自転車競走まで開いた歴史があります。宿泊した瀬戸内リトリート青凪で、夕食でいただいたのは愛媛あかね和牛。みかんなど柑橘類の搾りかすを食べて育った黒毛和牛で、日本で初めて赤身のおいしさを追求したブランド牛です。脂が少なく、やさしい味わいがとても印象に残りました。
道後温泉では、日本最初の軽便鉄道「坊っちゃん列車」に出会いました。1888年から67年間走り続け、夏目漱石の『坊っちゃん』にも「マッチ箱のような汽車」として登場します。松山の町を歩くと、どこへ行っても緩やかな坂が続き、『坂の上の雲』の舞台らしい風景が広がっています。道後の日本料理店「海舟」では、カミナリイカの耳をいただきました。カミナリイカはモンゴウイカの別名で、雷が鳴る頃においしくなることからそう呼ばれています。細かく包丁が入った耳は驚くほどコリコリとした食感で、何もつけずにそのまま味わいまし... more
愛媛という地名は、『古事記』に登場する女神・愛比売に由来し、「愛するお姫様」という意味があるといわれています。今回は愛媛県民文化大学で、正岡子規や夏目漱石、中村不折、上田万年らが近代日本語を築いたことについてお話ししてきました。愛媛では県民のソウルフード・鯛めしも味わいました。『古事記』や『日本書紀』にも鯛にまつわる話が残り、今治では鯛を丸ごと炊き込む鯛めし、宇和島では刺身を醤油や卵などに漬けてご飯にかける鯛めしが親しまれています。南予では、みかんを餌に育てた養殖鯛もいただきました。
松山は、空港に降り立った瞬間から空気も光も人の雰囲気もやわらかくて、「ぼっちゃん」を書くためにこの地を訪れた夏目漱石も、きっと同じような驚きを感じたのではないかと思いました。街の中心には松山城がそびえ、市電が今も変わらず走る風景は、漱石の時代を思わせます。今回訪れた料理店では、神経締めで知られる今治の漁師・藤本さんの魚をいただきました。魚にできるだけストレスを与えずに仕上げることで、おいしさが引き出されるそうです。食材も人も、ストレスをかけないことが大切なんですね。伸びやかな文章で書かれた「ぼっ... more
