神保町には、”静かな革命”を起こしていた女性たちによる、もう一つの文化がありました。声をあげずに書いた人たちのことです。料理をしながら、レシピの裏に自分の思いを隠していました。そこには台所から発信された文学がありあました。彼女たちを支えた神保町の場所とは？
神保町の名物ビアホール「ランチョン」、そのお店の奥のテーブルにいつも座っていた文士・吉田健一。
「両手で食べるような料理は、食べ物として不便だ。片手にはビール、もう片手にはつまめる何を持つのが理想だ・・・」こう語っていたそうです、彼にとって、酒とは記憶の装置であり、忘却の鍵でした。
神保町の小高い場所に立つ小さなホテル「山の上ホテル」。アールデコ様式の建築で、多くの文士に愛されました。その中でも、強烈な存在感を放っていたのが、三島由紀夫。彼は書くために、このホテルにやって来て、作品と闘っていました。そして時折、ふらりと１階に降りて、「てんぷら山の上」へ。静けさの中で、どんな味を嚙み締めていたんでしょうか。
サラダと聞いて思い出す文学作品といえば、1987年に出版された歌人・俵万智さんの「サラダ記念日」。時代をさかのぼると、「万葉集」の有名な歌「きみがため 春の野に出でて 若菜摘む 我が衣手に 雪は降りつつ」、これは、新春の若菜摘みを詠んだもの、奈良時代の人たちも、サラダにして食べていたんでしょうか？
