『城の崎にて』 志賀直哉の短編小説です。山手線にはねられ怪我をした志賀が、療養のため訪れた城崎温泉での様子を描いた「私小説」の代表的な作品です。
志賀が定宿にしていたのは「三木屋」という旅館でした。
現在は旅館として営まれていますが、志賀がやってきた1913年頃は、食事は自分で作って泊まるという「湯治宿」です。
そんな宿の女将に志賀直哉は、「ぼくは朝食にパンが食べたい」と言います。
女将は「パン」という言葉さえ知りません。
果たして、志賀の要望はどうなったのでしょうか。
京都・舞鶴の港に並ぶ「赤レンガ倉庫群」。明治時代、欧米の港町文化とともに全国へ広まったレンガ建築は、日本の蔵とは異なる、どこか温かみのある佇まいを見せます。その赤褐色は、まるでチョコレートのよう。舞鶴のレンガ倉庫には、かつて海軍の食料だけでなく、甘い菓子やビールのように心を和ませる品々も保管されていたのかもしれません。カカオ色の壁が並ぶ港町で、人々の暮らしと味覚の記憶が静かに息づいています。
舞鶴市内には縄文時代から人々が豊かに暮らしていた痕跡があり、それは市内各地の遺跡で確認されています。弥生時代に入ると「稲作」も始まります。舞鶴の海・山の恵みは、飛鳥時代になると庶民が味わうだけでなく、天皇へも献上されるようになります。持統天皇のいた「藤原京」へは、「カワハギの干物」が貢がれたことが記録に残っています。対馬海流が運ぶ舞鶴の海の幸は、古来から天皇さえ納得させるおいしさだったのです。
舞鶴港は、第二次大戦後13年間にわたり、シベリアなどに抑留された多くの人々の引揚者を受け入れました。戦後歌い継がれてきた歌謡曲『岸壁の母』。シベリアで抑留された息子の帰還を信じ、舞鶴港に立ち続けた母親の心情を歌った曲です。港の近くには、その姿をモチーフにした「母の像」が佇んでいます。抑留された人々も極限状態の中で思い出したのは、こうした母親の姿だったでしょう。母親からかけられた言葉、作ってくれた温かい食事を思い浮かべながら、必死に生き延びたのではないでしょうか…。
