フェルメールの『真珠の耳飾りの少女』は一度見たら忘れない絵です。大村湾周辺では、子供の頃、海に潜るとアコヤ貝が岩に多く張り付いており、炭火で焼いてバター醤油で食べる習慣がありました。時には貝の中から真珠が出てくることもあり、四つ葉のクローバーを見つけた時の嬉しさがありました。真珠養殖で有名なミキモトですが、大村湾では高島末五郎が昭和12年に、真珠を丸く美しく育てるためのアコヤ貝養殖を始めています。『肥前風土記』には、大村湾の島の女性が献上した貝から二つの真珠が出てきたため、その島を「玉の島」と名... more
江戸時代の大村藩があった地域は、かつて「肥前彼杵（ひぜん そのぎ）」と呼ばれていました。室町時代末期の1561年、平戸を追われたポルトガル船とキリスト教の神父たちが、大村湾入口の横瀬港を見つけます。領主・大村純忠は、ポルトガルとの貿易によって領地拡大や勢力拡大ができると考え、キリスト教を受け入れました。1563年には大規模なキリスト教布教も始まります。大村は京都や関東から遠い土地でしたが、西洋とのつながりによって時代の変化を感じていた場所でした。また、大村では塩ゆでピーナッツが名物になっています... more
