  • A Gem in the World of Photography Business Education

I’ve been a loyal listener of PhotoBizX for years, and it remains the single most valuable resource for my photography business. Andrew Hellmich has an incredible knack for interviewing; he consistently asks his guests the exact questions I’m thinking, digging deep into the nuts and bolts of the “how" rather than staying on the surface.

Beyond the podcast episodes, the Premium membership is worth its weight in gold. Andrew frequently organises fantastic webinars and training sessions led by exp... more

  • Changed my life

It’s taken me way too long to write a review for a podcast that has been changing my life & business since 2016. I’ve just restarted listening after a break of a few years from business & PBX, and it’s like reconnecting with an old friend - I’ve already listened through most of the 2025 interviews and picked up so much valuable information as I rebuild my business. It’s fair to say I’m only in business because of this podcast - truly life changing.

  • I’m always learning from your guests

The latest instalment sounds like an episode I need to listen to! But what I find is that even the podcasts I think don’t relate to me at all - boudoir, pet photography etc - they always have something that I can learn; whether it’s about customer service or CRM or marketing strategies etc.

Thanks Andrew, as always, for the best photography business podcast available.

  • Incredibly useful

I’ve enjoyed Andrew’s podcast for a long time (and finally had the honour of being a guest last year). I just love how super, practically useful Andrew makes each interview. He asks the questions that we photographers really want answered. Thank you Andrew!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

665: Art Streiber – Why Clients Trust Him With Million-Dollar Shoots
Q: Is there a single breakthrough moment or is it grinding it out?
Progress comes from a series of rises and runs in one's career, with deliberate preparation meeting opportunities, rather than a single defining breakthrough.
665: Art Streiber – Why Clients Trust Him With Million-Dollar Shoots
Q: So how creative do you get to be in your line of work?
Creativity varies by project; in magazine work he often generates ideas from ground zero, deeply researches lighting and mood, and collaborates to shape the final image while respecting client constraints.
660: Drew Forsyth – From Small Portrait Jobs to High-Profile Commercial Photography Clients
Q: How do you handle situations where a client asks for more work on a job you've already quoteed for?
Agree to add the work if it's feasible, but ensure the client understands the impact on deliverables, post-production, and cost; often you propose cutbacks (e.g., fewer looks or a half-day instead of a full day) to fit the budget while preserving key outputs.
660: Drew Forsyth – From Small Portrait Jobs to High-Profile Commercial Photography Clients
Q: What does a typical day look like for you as a mostly solo operator with assistants?
A typical week combines admin, invoicing, and prep with actual shoots; the rhythm is to protect time for meetings, planning, and post, while using assistants for production tasks and retaining control of client conversations and decisions.
660: Drew Forsyth – From Small Portrait Jobs to High-Profile Commercial Photography Clients
Q: How do you know what to charge when moving from portrait work to commercial assignments?
Start with asking the client what the fee could be, compare with industry peers, and then adjust based on the scope, pre-production, and post-production needs; as you grow more confident, you can set larger, justified day rates and consider usage fees.
