Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Armenia at a Crossroads: Elections, Russia, and the EU. Christoph Bilban and Hannes Meissner
Q: What role did the EU summit and EPC in Yerevan play in signaling Armenia's future alignment—does it push toward candidacy or a strengthened partnership?
The events were described as PR-visible and symbolically important, signaling Armenia's orientation toward Europe. They emphasized maximizing the partnership framework signed in 2017, with the potential to lay foundations for candidacy in the midterm rather than immediate membership, highlighting a stepwise approach to EU integration.
Armenia at a Crossroads: Elections, Russia, and the EU. Christoph Bilban and Hannes Meissner
Q: Christoph, can you tell us a little bit more about the political system in Armenia and whether it functions as a democracy?
Armenia is a parliamentary republic where the prime minister is the head of government. The regime has undergone democratization since 2018, though evaluations vary by index; while some reports show progress, others point to vulnerabilities and ongoing consolidation of power. The current trend is toward a more multi-vector foreign policy, with hopes for EU engagement balanced against Russia's influence.
Sixteen Years Later: Is Hungary Ready for Change? Andrea Pető
Q: So my question to you is where is the left in Hungary? Is there any left left or what happened to them?
The left in Hungary has been weakened by decades of neoliberal reorientation and internal fragmentation, with the Democratic Coalition struggling to pass the electoral threshold and progressive politics largely confined to intellectual circles rather than broad, mass appeal. The loss of a unifying, universal social program has left a vacuum that illiberal actors have exploited.
Sixteen Years Later: Is Hungary Ready for Change? Andrea Pető
Q: And that's a crucial election that's happening in April, on the 12th of April. Viktor Orbán has been there for 16 years now. How do you assess it? Is it really such a crucial, such a different election from any other that were there before?
The election is structurally high-stakes due to gerrymandering and resource imbalance, with the opposition trying to translate malevolent electoral dynamics into real gains. While polls show a challenge, historical patterns suggest that control over institutions and the electoral system may still favor the incumbents unless mobilization and credible, universal policies appeal beyond the core supporters.
Democratizing Security in Europe. Teresa Coratella and Tomasz Kowalik
Q: How are Europe justifying the trade-offs on defence expenditure due to increasing costs faced by citizens?
Tomasz explains that the Allies have committed to increasing defence expenditures to better match the threats, and historical context plays an essential role in the acceptability of these increases among societies.
