Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Joe Troop & The Truth Machine
Q: How has the experience with the Kennedy Center affected your view on art and activism?
The backlash highlighted the volatility of public opinion online and the necessity of staying true to your mission as an artist, even when it means facing cancellation or misunderstanding; it underscored that art can be a powerful political act but also that audiences and platforms can complicate those messages.
Joe Troop & The Truth Machine
Q: Tell me about how you began to write songs with serious topic matter.
I've always been drawn to questions about why things work the way they do, and migration became a central focus as I lived abroad and met diverse communities; I started writing songs about immigrants and migrants and later joined activists on the borderlands, which deepened my work.
James Houlahan – “On a Wing”
Q: But as an artist, what is your overriding thread and message?
He shares a reluctance to pin a single message to his songs, preferring a sense of mystery and exploration, where the songs guide themselves and he stays open to where creativity leads rather than delivering a fixed or didactic takeaway.
James Houlahan – “On a Wing”
Q: What are your inspirations, musical and otherwise?
James describes a wide spectrum of influences—from early exposure to theater and Muppets to Dylan, the Harry Smith anthology, and a fascination with how tradition and poetry shape his music. He emphasizes both reverence for tradition and personal life events (like becoming a parent) as driving forces behind his work.
Kim Moberg – “All That Really Matters” and “The Seven Fires Prophecy Suite”
Q: What advice do you have for artists dealing with anxiety or stage fright?
She emphasizes taking deep breaths, normalizing anxiety as common, and encourages perseverance, practice, and using art as a vehicle for personal growth and connection.
