  • Love

Feb 4th Destiny: Michael J. Menard shoe is important for sure. Most important is to understand that there can be a reason for the suffering. I've had a lot of serious abuse in my childhood. It's given me the reason to heal by finding love and love's power. I became a physician because of it. I agree it can be very tragic growing up in neglect and abuse and it can be a gift by being the motivation to learn about love in all it's full on forms. It's important that we work twords a better way to ra... more

  • Rewriting History

In the Popol Vu episode the host defends priest Diego and thinks he may have only culturally committed genocide against the Maya by burning their writings. How dare you rewrite history and cover the truth that there was a genocide! So many Maya died and were tortured by this priest and you were surprised that he served time in prison and shouldn't have. I do not trust that this show actually reports historical facts.

Dixion Chibanda, MD: The Friendship Bench

A typical session begins with inviting the client to share their story, then gradual reflection and redirection through culturally informed methods like totems and proverbs; the client identifies a priority issue, often tied to social and relational problems, and a concrete action plan is developed.
Dixion Chibanda, MD: The Friendship Bench
Q: Why the focus on elders and grandmothers, and how does the training work?
The interviewee explains that grandmothers naturally embody empathy and life experience, provide a cost-effective and sustainable approach, and undergo a structured three-phase training that emphasizes non-verbal communication, screening tools, and basic cognitive-behavioral techniques, with safeguards to refer severe cases to professionals when needed.
Dixion Chibanda, MD: The Friendship Bench
Q: Talk a little bit about your personal experience, which led you to the creation of the Friendship Bench program.
Dr. Chibanda describes how the suicide of a patient and the barriers to hospital-based care motivated him to bring care into communities, using grandmothers as trusted, relatable figures who could listen, reflect, and guide people toward a healthier path without over-medicalizing distress.
