  • Great content but terrible recordings

Most (all?) of these episodes are recorded live. From what I can hear, the topics and discussions are interesting but it is painfully difficult to follow the conversations because the quality of the recordings is so poor.

Talking Points

Rep 1 - The Times Are Racing (2024/25 Season)
Q: What can you tell us about the upcoming program featuring George Balanchine's works?
The next program will include works by Balanchine like Square Dance and Prodigal Son, which will be staged by Peter Boll who danced these pieces during his career.
Rep 1 - The Times Are Racing (2024/25 Season)
Q: Is there a back and forth with the choreographer and the composer, and does the music change over time for the first two numbers?
Yes, with commissioned works, there is a strong collaboration between the composer and the choreographer, particularly regarding the structure and emotional feel of the piece, though once the score is set, it becomes finalized.
Rep 3 - The Sleeping Beauty (2024/25)
Q: Did the musicians have to change much of how they played?
No, although overall, tempos are faster making it more intense, especially for the violins who have fewer breaks.
Rep 3 - The Sleeping Beauty (2024/25)
Q: How did you reconcile the historical choreography with, I guess, the way that ballets taught and trained in the 21st century? How did you balance those things out?
We teach the steps as they're written down but encourage dancers to move in ways that feel natural to them, balancing historical accuracy with modern expression.
Resident Choreographer Jessica Lang - PNB Conversation Series
Q: Can you as a choreographer see what the stage piece will be like just when you're in the studio?
Yes, Jessica can visualize the stage piece based on her experiences and the design of the space even before the choreography is finalized.
